Backrest Adjustment Motor
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Locking compound fluid (D 000 600 A2)
Removing
• Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when disconnecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- Remove front seat:
• Standard and Sport Power Seat, Comfort Seat and Super Sport Seat. Refer to => [ Power Standard Front Seats ] Power Standard Front Seats.
- Attach front seat to Fixture For Seat Repair (VAS 6136). Refer to => [ Front Seat, Installing on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136 ] Front Seat, Installing on Fixture for Seat Repair VAS 6136.
- Remove tunnel side trim panel. Refer to => [ Trim, Tunnel Side ] Trim, Tunnel Side.
- Remove tunnel side trim panel. Refer to => [ Trim, Sill Side ] Trim, Sill Side.
- Remove the backrest cover. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover ] Backrest Cover.
- Mark the angle adjustment of the left and right backrest mounting brackets on the seat as follows:
- Make a permanent mark (line) - arrow A - on the backrest frame - 2 - right at the front edge - arrow B - of the anchor - 1 -.
• Do not damage the surface of the anchor when marking it by scratching or denting it.
• Do not remove the cover - 4 - under any circumstances.
- Remove the nut - 5 - from the shaft - 3 -.
- Remove the upholstery on the backrest around the backrest hinge. Refer to => [ Backrest Cover and Cushion ] Backrest Cover and Cushion.
• The switch unit must be removed to remove the backrest adjustment motor - 7 - but it does not need to be replaced.
- Remove the switch unit. Refer to => [ Switch Unit, Microswitch for Backrest Adjustment ] Switch Unit, Microswitch for Backrest Adjustment.
- Remove the shaft - 3 - in the - direction of the arrow - from the backrest frame - 1 -.
- Disconnect the connector - 6 - on the backrest adjustment motor.
- Remove the bolt - 2 -.
- Remove the bracket adjustment motor - 7 - from the bracket - 5 -.
Installation
• Follow the safety precautions for pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Restraint System Components ] Description and Operation.
• Before handling any airbag units (for example, when connecting the connector), the person handling them must "discharge static electricity". For example, by briefly touching the door striker pin.
- threaded screw holes must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
- Before installing, clean the shaft thread - 3 - (for example, with thread cutter).
- Check the position of the backrest frame - 2 - and the anchor - 1 - on the left and right side.
• The left and right backrest frames must be in the position marked before removal - arrows A and B -.
- If the left and right backrest frames are not in the position marked before removal, correct their position accordingly.
- Position the backrest adjustment motor - 1 - on the bracket - 3 -.
- Replace the bolt - 4 -. Coat it with locking compound fluid (D 000 600 A2) and tighten it by hand.
• It must still be possible to move the backrest adjustment motor.
- First slide the shaft through the anchor (tunnel side) as far as the stop - 2 - in the backrest adjustment motor.
- Check if the profile of the inserted shaft and the mount - 2 - in the backrest adjustment motor to see if they align.
• If the shaft profile and the mount in the backrest adjustment motor align:
- Slide the shaft through the mount in the backrest adjustment motor up to approximately the middle of the seat.
• If the shaft profile and the mount in the backrest adjustment motor do not align:
- Connect an external power source (12V) to the backrest adjustment motor - 1 -.
- Rotate the mount - 2 - until it aligns with the shaft profile.
- Slide the shaft through the mount in the backrest adjustment motor up to approximately the middle of the seat.
- Install the switch unit. Refer to => [ ] Switch Unit, Microswitch for Backrest Adjustment.
- Slide the shaft - 3 - through the spindle and the anchor (sill side) as far as the stop.
- Apply locking compound fluid (D 000 600 A2) to the shaft threaded piece.
- Install and tighten the new nut - 5 - on the shaft.
- Bolt the backrest adjustment motor on the bracket - 3 - and tighten it to the tightening specification.
- Adjust the switch unit microswitch - 2 -. Refer to => [ Switch Unit Microswitch, Adjusting ] Switch Unit Microswitch, Adjusting.
- After adjusting the switch unit, slide the locking bushing - 4 - onto the spindle - 3 -.
- Lock the locking bushing with the spindle.
- Check the switch unit. Refer to => [ Switch Unit Microswitch, Checking ] Switch Unit Microswitch, Checking.
Further installation is performed in reverse sequence of removal, but observe the following:
• Ensure that electrical connections are pushed in as far as stop and engage with a click.
Connect the battery with the ignition switched on. Pyrotechnic components could deploy after connecting the battery if they were not repaired correctly. Individuals must not be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition switched on.
• If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (K75) indicates a fault after installation, DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again .
- Perform the following after removing and installing the backrest adjustment motor:
• Calibration, performing, refer to => [ Switch Unit, Calibrating ] Switch Unit, Calibrating.
• Perform function test, refer to => [ Function Test, Performing ] Function Test, Performing.
