Rear Vision Camera: Testing and Inspection
Rearview Camera System, Calibrating
After performing service work on the vehicle, it may be necessary to calibrate the rear view camera system again. In detail, this is the case after:
• Rear view camera (R189), Removing and Installing
• Rear view camera system control module (J772), Removing and Installing
• Collision repairs on rear lid
• Rear Axle Repairs
Preparations before starting work
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051)
• Calibration tool for lane changing assist (VAS 6350)
• Spacing laser (VAS 6350/2)
Vehicle must stand on a firm and level surface to perform the calibration. No persons may be in the vehicle interior during the measurement. Vehicle must not be moved during the measurement, opening and closing of vehicle doors is to be avoided. The rear lid is closed.
- Connect -> Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
- Bring the steering angle sensor (G85) into 0-position (wheels straight ahead).

9 Measuring Field of Calibration Platform
• Distance to rear wheel axle 1.47 m - 1.90 m - dimension A -
Setting Up Measuring Device
- Check the number of bolts in the wheels.
- Install the correct wheel pick-ups.
- To do so, secure three wheel bolt adapters in the hole circle to each wheel pick-up.
- Attach paddles to both wheel pick-ups and secure them with clamping bolt.
- Set the wheel pick-ups onto wheel mounting bolts at the rear wheels.
When doing this, the wheel pick-ups are positioned by the O-rings in the adapters and held in place.
• Attach wheel pick-ups onto wheels so that any installed anti-theft wheel mounting bolts are not connected to the wheel pick-ups.
- Adjust paddle with aid of lock bolts so that they move freely just above the floor.
Make sure paddles move easily.
- Position the calibration platform behind the vehicle at a distance of 1.47 m to 1.90 m to the rear wheels, see - dimension A - in the illustration.
- Bring calibration platform to a horizontal position.
- Twist plastic feet under calibration platform so that air bubble in spirit level is located exactly in the center of the indicator - arrow -.
Make sure light does not reflect off the calibration platform.
Reflections affect the rear view camera (R189) and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
- Switch on laser - 1 - on calibration platform and align entire calibration platform so that laser beam hits center above of Audi rings.
- Make sure the Audi rings are centered on the rear. Adjust the laser beam as needed.
- Switch (VAS 6350/2) on with ON button.
The following display appears and laser is switched on.
- Hold the (VAS 6350/2) - 2 - flush in the bracket on one side of the calibration platform. The (VAS 6350/2) must sit securely on the bracket.
- Make sure that laser beam from (VAS 6350/2) hits lower, enlarged part of paddle - 1 -.
If this is not the case, paddles must be corrected accordingly via clamping bolts on the wheel pick-ups.
- With one hand, hold the (VAS 6350/2) firmly in the bracket on the calibration platform while the laser beam is visible on the paddle.
- Now press the ON button briefly for the distance measurement.
Display readout
- Note the value read off.
- Repeat measuring procedure in the same manner for the rear wheel on the other side of the calibration platform.
The distance value must be the same on both sides.
If values are not identical:
- Adjust calibration platform until values on both sides are identical.
When aligning the calibration platform, make sure the laser beam still strikes the center of the Audi rings and the indicator in the air bubble and the level remains centered. If necessary, make further corrections.
- Measure height of calibration platform, dimension - H - (top edge platform - floor).
The measured distance and height must now be entered in the diagnostic operation system (VAS 5051A) in millimeters.
Performing Calibration
In (VAS 5051A), select "Guided Functions".
or
In (VAS 5051A), select guided fault finding.
- Select the corresponding vehicle data in the vehicle selection menu.
- Select rear view camera system.
- Select functions.
- Select calibration.
Further assistance during calibration procedure is given by (VAS 5051A).
Make sure light does not reflect off the calibration platform.
Reflections affect the rear view camera (R189) and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
