Torque Converter, Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Depth Gauge (VAS 6082)
Installing
• Tightening specifications, refer to one of the following:
• 3.0L TDI engine, refer to => [ Transmission, Installing ] Transmission, Installing.
• 4.3L FSI engine, refer to => [ Transmission ] Transmission.
- Press the torque converter hub through the shaft seal as far as the first stop.
- Lightly press the torque converter inwards and rotate it until the slots on the torque converter hub engage in the drive lugs on the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pump gear and the torque converter slides in a noticeable distance.
- The outer sealing lip on the shaft seal can fold inward when the torque converter is being installed - arrow -.
- If this happens, pull the torque converter out 5 mm. This will correct the position of the sealing lip - arrow -.
- Then, push the torque converter all the way into the transmission.
Installed Dimension
When the converter is inserted correctly, the distance - a - between the contact surfaces of the bellhousing and the torque converter is at least 19 mm.
- Always use new bolts to secure the drive plate to the torque converter. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
If the converter is not properly installed, the drive lugs on the converter and the ATF pump will be severely damaged when the transmission is attached to the engine.
Note the following when installing the transmission.
Danger of causing damage to the torque converter or the ATF pump.
• Before and during fastening the engine/transmission flange bolts, check that the torque converter can still be turned behind the drive plate. If the converter still does not turn, then assume it is installed incorrectly.
Danger of leaks on the torque converter seal.
• The covers - items 3 through 8 -=> [ Covers ] Description and Operation prevent dust and dirt from getting into the torque converter bellhousing. Install the covers if necessary.
