Camshaft, Measuring Radial Play

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Plastigage

Procedure

- Removing cam follower. Refer to => [ Left Cylinder Head Camshaft ] Left Cylinder Head Camshaft.

- Clean the bearing and the bearing journals.

- Place Plastigage over entire width of bearing journal or into bearing.

• Plastigage must rest in center of bearing.

- Re-install the camshafts, mount the bearing bracket and tighten to 10 Nm. Refer to => [ Left Cylinder Head Guide Frame, Tightening Specifications and Sequence ] Valvetrain Overview, do not turn the camshafts while doing this.

- Remove the bearing bracket and camshafts.

- Compare width of Plastigage with calibrated scale.

Radial clearance:

• New: 0.035 to 0.085 mm

• Wear limit: 0.100 mm
