Left Flange Shaft
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Drift (VW 295)
• Puller (T10037)
• Oil receptacle
Removing
• Transmission installed.
- Remove the left front wheel and tire.
- On vehicles equipped with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for the exhaust pipe on the auxiliary heater to noise insulation.
- Remove the bolts or quick release screws - 1 to 3 - and remove the noise insulation at front and rear.
- If installed, remove bolt - 1 - for noise insulation cover over the left drive axle.
- Disengage hook - 2 - and remove the noise insulation cover.
- Where installed, remove heat shield for left drive axle.
- Remove left drive axle.
- Place an oil drain pan underneath the transmission.
- Tightly thread lower support of puller (T10037 ) on the cover for the differential - arrow -.
• To avoid damage to the needle bearings (polygon bearings) or differential during removal, the flange shaft must be removed evenly, parallel and without one sided pressure
- Remove left flange shaft using the puller (T10037 ) only far enough out until the bearing on the shaft is pulled out of transmission housing.
Installing
Installation is in the reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Replace securing ring for flange shaft, to do this, clamp flange shaft in a vise with protective pads.
- Press old securing ring out of groove of flange shaft with new securing ring - A -.
- Clean flange shaft.
- A damaged sealing ring must be replaced. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft Seal ] Left Flange Shaft Seal.
- Drive in flange shaft using needle bearing drift (VW 295).
- Install left drive axle.
- Check gear oil level in front final drive. Refer to => [ Front Final Drive, Gear Oil
