Engine Oil Pressure: Testing and Inspection

Oil Pressure and Oil Pressure Switch, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Oil Pressure Gauge (V.A.G 1342)

Voltage Tester (V.A.G 1527 B)

Connector Test Set (V.A.G 1594 C)

Test Prerequisites

Oil level OK.

The oil pressure indicator lamp must light up for approximately 3 seconds when the ignition is switched on.

On vehicles with Auto-Check-System, the indicator "OK" must light up (check symbol).

Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (176 °F) (coolant fan must start up once).

Function test and servicing the optical and acoustic oil pressure indicator: Wiring diagrams see vehicle diagnostic tester "Function and Component Selection".

Test Sequence

Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Oil Filter, Oil Cooler and Oil Pressure Switch Overview ] Oil Filter, Oil Cooler and Oil Pressure Switch Overview.

- Remove the oil pressure switch (F1) and install it in the tester.

- Thread oil pressure gauge into oil filter bracket in place of the oil pressure switch.

- Connect the tester brown wire to Ground (GND).

- Connect (V.A.G 1527 B) using adapter cables from (V.A.G 1594 C) to battery positive and oil pressure switch. LED must not light up.

- If the LED illuminates, replace the oil pressure switch.

If the LED does not light up:

- Start the engine and let it run at increased RPM: the LED must come on at 1.2 to 1.6 bar (17.4 to 20.3 psi), otherwise replace the oil pressure switch. Increase engine speed further. At 2000 RPM and an oil temperature of 80 °C (176 °F), the oil pressure should be between 2.7 bar and 4.5 bar (29 and 65.26 psi).
