Selector Mechanism, Checking
Check overview:
• 1. Selector mechanism function test
• 2. Checking ignition key removal lock
• 3. Locking button on selector lever handle, checking
- If the shift mechanism does not function as described, perform " Guided Fault Finding" with Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B).
1. Selector mechanism function test
• In selector lever positions "S", "D", " R" and "Tiptronic gate" the starter motor will not operate.
• If selector lever position "N" is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/h, the selector lever lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector lever. Selector lever can be shifted into driving gear.
• For speeds below 2 km/h (almost standstill) and shifting into selector lever position "N", the shift lock solenoid must only engage after approximately 1 second. Selector lever can only be shifted out of position " N" with the brake pedal operated.
Selector lever in "P" position and ignition switched on:
- Do not operate brake pedal.
• Selector lever is locked and also cannot be shifted out of position " P" while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed. Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) blocks selector lever.
- Press brake pedal and hold.
• Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) releases selector lever. It must be possible to select a driving mode without "hitching " while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed.
• Slowly shift selector lever from "P" through "R, N, D, S", checking whether Transmission Range (TR) Display (Y6) in instrument cluster matches the selector lever position.
Selector lever in "N" position and ignition switched on:
- Do not operate brake pedal.
• Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position " N" without pressing the button on selector lever handle. Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) blocks selector lever.
• Selector lever is not locked immediately when rapidly shifting through position "N" (e.g. from "R" to "D"). This enables e.g. "forward and reverse maneuvers" when vehicle is stuck. Shift lock engages when selector lever is located in "N" for longer than approximately 1 s with brake not being pressed.
- Operate brake pedal.
• Shift Lock Solenoid (N110) releases selector lever. It must be possible to select a driving mode without "hitching " while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed.
Selector lever in "D" position, ignition and lights switched on:
- Shift selector lever into "Tiptronic gate".
• The illumination of the "D" symbol in the selector lever display must go out, and the "+" and "-" symbols must light up.
• When the selector lever is switched into "Tiptronic" the selector lever position display in the instrument cluster must change from " PRNDS" to "654321".
If specified values are not obtained:
- Adjust selector lever cable.
• Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting
• Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting
- Check ignition key removal lock.
2. Check ignition key withdrawal lock
- Switch ignition key to driving position ("ignition on").
- Press brake pedal and hold.
• It must be possible to shift selector lever out of position " P" without "hitching" while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed.
- Switch ignition off.
• It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any other position than "P".
- Place selector lever in position "P".
• It must be possible to move ignition key into removal position without " sticking".
- Remove ignition key.
• It must be possible to remove ignition key only in position " P".
• Selector lever cannot be shifted out of position "P" with the locking button pressed and foot brake operated.
If specified values are not obtained:
- Adjust locking cable.
• Refer to => [ Locking Cable Adjusting ] Locking Cable Adjusting
• Refer to => [ Locking Cable, Adjusting ] Locking Cable, Adjusting
3. Check locking button on selector lever handle
Check locking button for ease of movement:
• It must be possible to press the locking button without great force.
• After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself
If specified values are not obtained:
- Check whether selector lever handle is installed correctly.
- Check whether selector rod or selector lever is bent.
Function test:
• The ignition is switched on.
Locking button on selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.
• "P" to "R" and also press brake pedal
• "D" to "S"
• "N" to "R"; in standstill, also press brake pedal after long wait
• "R" to "P"
If specified values are not obtained:
- Check whether selector lever handle is installed correctly.
- Adjust selector lever cable.
• Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting
• Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting
