01J,0AN Continuously Variable Transmission

Hydraulic Control Module

Observe general repair notes => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.

Rules of cleanliness for working on automatic transmissions => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.

Always replace a dirty or faulty hydraulic control module.

Removing

- Remove end cover.

- Remove Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217 ) => [ Transmission Control Module ] 01J,0AN Continuously Variable Transmission.

CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the spring.

Do not remove or install the spring using sharp edged pliers or something similar.

If the spring wire gets damaged through notches or bends, the slider for selector lever position will not function correctly.

- Unhook spring - 1 - on the slider for selector lever position - 2 - and on selector shaft - 3 -.

- Pull selector lever lock mechanism lever - 2 - downward out of bearing hole of hydraulic control module. When doing so, pay attention to roller - 1 -.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove hydraulic control module.

CAUTION!
The hydraulic control assembly must not under any circumstances be supported on the long pump shaft on the back side or raised up. Otherwise, the blades inside the vane pump will be crushed and the pump damaged.

Do not pay attention to items - A and B -.

- Remove axial sealing elements - A - and - B - from the transmission.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

- Replace gaskets and O-rings.

- Replace axial sealing elements - A - (qty. 4) and - B -.

Installation position: The axial sealing elements - A - must be installed with the sealing lips facing upward, as illustrated.

- Coat axial sealing elements with ATF before installing - arrow -.

- Install cover- arrow - for sensor wheel "II ".

Locating tab on rear side of cover must be inserted into small hole on transmission surface.

- Push selector shaft lever - 2 - clockwise all the way so that the shifting cam - 1 - is almost vertical (slightly angled to the right).

- Press control piston - B - on rear side of hydraulic control module completely inward (left) until it engages into assembly spring - A -.

- Insert hydraulic control assembly into transmission. Align unit properly to fit without jamming.

When installing control module, make sure that shifting cam (item 1 in Fig. A38-0094 ) engages into free groove - arrow - on control piston - B -.

- Hand-tighten bolts - arrows -. Bolt - arrow 1 - is shorter than the other two bolts.

- Check that cover is mounted properly.

Locating tab - B - must be inserted into hole intended for it on the transmission.

Disregard item - B -.

Check function of control piston

- Move selector shaft at detent plate - C - or at lever for selector shaft several times toward left and right.

When doing this, control piston - B - must travel outward and inward accordingly - arrow -.

If control piston does not move, shifting cam has not engaged into groove - arrow - at control piston on rear side of hydraulic control module. In this case:

- Remove hydraulic control module once again and insert again.

- Tighten bolts - arrows -.

Install slider for selector lever position

- Install roller - 1 - with the shoulder of the selector lever lock mechanism lever on the lever.

- Slide selector lever lock mechanism lever into bearing hole in the hydraulic control module housing.

CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the spring.

Do not remove or install the spring using sharp edged pliers or something similar.

If the spring wire gets damaged through notches or bends, the slider for selector lever position will not function correctly.

- Install spring - 1 - into selector shaft - 3 - and selector lever lock mechanism lever - 2 -.

For the sake of illustration, transmission is shown without hydraulic control module.

- Shift lever for selector shaft - 2 - toward front and rear until stop:

Detent plate - arrow - moves toward front or toward rear.

When doing this, it must allow the roller - B - to be engaged in the individual notches.

The selector lever lock mechanism lever - C - moves in steps toward front or rear.

Roller must be installed with collar facing downward so that it cannot be pulled off upward.

- Clean selector shaft => [ Cleaning Selector Shaft ] 01J,0AN Transmission.

- Insert Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217 ) with new O-rings => [ Transmission Control Module ] 01J,0AN Continuously Variable Transmission.

- Install end cover.

- Fill with ATF => [ ATF, Filling for ATF Flush ] ATF, Filling for ATF Flush.

- After installing transmission, check ATF level and add if necessary.

If the hydraulic control module was replaced, then perform this additional work:

Perform adaptation for Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217).

Perform an adaptation drive.

Use Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) for this.

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing, and Information System ( VAS 5051B) connected to the vehicle.

- Vehicle-specific access to Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing, and Information System (VAS 5051B) in "Guided Fault Finding".

- In the program "02 - Transmission Electronics", select " 02 - Replace hydraulic control module".
