Selector Lever Cable, 3.2L TFSI
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
Removing
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Loosen quick-release screws - 2 - and - 3 - and remove rear noise insulation.
• To prevent damage, decoupling element in the front exhaust pipes must never be angled by more than 10°.
- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamps - arrows -.
- Disengage rear section of exhaust system at retaining loops and remove.
• To remove the rear section of the exhaust system, a second technician will be required.
- Remove heat shield - A - for driveshaft - arrows -.
- Remove exhaust system heat shield - 1 - below shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Remove bolts at transmission/driveshaft flange.
- Press driveshaft - 2 - together with rear final drive. CV joints can be moved axially.
- Tie driveshaft up and toward the side to the heat shield - arrow -.
- Remove Universal Support (V.A.G 1359/2) from Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
- Position Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) thrust disc centered on lower frame boss - arrow - and support transmission from underneath.
- First remove the bolts - 2 - and - 3 - and then the subframe bolts - 1 - and - 4 -.
- Slowly lower transmission and subframe using engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) to dimension - a -.
• Dimension - a - = 50 mm
- Press selector lever cable ball joint - 1 - off from selector shaft lever.
- Remove mounting bracket on the transmission - arrows -.
• In the illustration the transmission support is removed.
• Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.
- Remove selector lever cable boot from the cover under the selector mechanism and push it to the rear.
- Remove lower cover from shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Remove retaining clip - 1 - for selector lever cable on shift mechanism downward.
- Pull plastic securing spring - 2 - slightly to front and push pin - 3 - upward only as far as necessary - arrow -.
• Make sure that pin is not pushed fully out.
- Remove selector lever cable - 4 - from shift mechanism.
• Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
• Tightening specifications. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable and Locking Cable Assembly Overview ] Selector Lever Cable and Locking Cable Assembly Overview and => [ Shift Mechanism Assembly Overview ] Shift Mechanism Assembly Overview.
- Install new securing clasp - 1 - for selector lever cable to shift mechanism.
• Installation position: The angled end of the securing clasp faces toward the inside of the shift mechanism.
- Insert the end of the selector lever cable - 4 - into the joint of the selector lever.
- Press pin - 3 - downward - arrow -.
- Check whether plastic securing spring - 2 - has locked the pin.
- Bolt lower cover securely to shift mechanism - arrows -.
- Attach the selector lever cable boot into the lower cover under the selector mechanism.
- Move selector lever several times from "P" through " S".
• Shift mechanism and selector lever cable must have freedom of movement during this, if necessary, replace selector lever cable or service shift mechanism.
• Take care not to bend or kink selector lever cable.
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Press selector shaft lever - 1 - on transmission completely toward rear - arrow - until parking lock engages.
• When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.
- Make sure that selector lever cable has been routed free of kinks and tension.
- Carefully push the selector lever cable - 1 - onto the selector shaft lever ball head.
• Do not bend selector shaft lever when pressing on, otherwise shift mechanism can no longer be adjusted exactly.
- Secure selector lever cable bracket - arrows -.
- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Checking and Adjusting.
- Install subframe and following tightening sequence..
- Tighten driveshaft on the transmission.
- Install exhaust system tension-free.
