Final Drive/Transmission Housing Shaft Seal, Replacing
• A faulty sealing ring lets ATF or axle oil escape into the converter housing via the center vent of the shaft seal (between the two sealing lips).
• Furthermore, a faulty sealing ring can leak ATF into the differential. It is overfilled and oil escapes from final drive breather hole.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Extractor Lever (VW 681)
• Double Sealing Ring Installer (3383)
• Oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782 )
Procedure
- Loosen the left and right drive axle bolt - arrow - on the wheel hub with the vehicle still standing on its wheels.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove right drive axle heat shield - arrows -.
• The third bolt is not visible in the illustration.
- Remove the left and right drive axle - 1 - from the transmission flange shaft.
- Remove flange shaft bolt - arrow - while securing flange shaft against turning with drift.
- Place Used Oil Collection and Extraction Device ( V.A.G 1782) under transmission.
- Extract the gear oil from the final drive.
- Pull out right drive flange.
- Remove right transmission support. Refer to => [ Left and Right Transmission Supports ] 01V,01VA Transmission.
- Remove final drive cover bolts - 12 through 1 - and remove cover.
- Pull out differential and remove.
- Remove tapered roller bearing outer race for differential - 1 - and shim - 2 - located behind it from transmission housing by hand.
• The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.
- Remove left drive flange. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft Seal and Grooved Ball Bearing ] Left Flange Shaft Seal and Grooved Ball Bearing.
- Remove shaft seal.
• Extractor lever must be positioned behind both sealing lips of the shaft seal. Do not position at outer circumference of shaft seal, otherwise the contact surface in transmission housing will be damaged. Guide the lever carefully when prying the seal.
- Examine shaft seal seat in transmission housing for damage; if necessary rework.
- Coat outer circumference and sealing lip of sealing ring with ATF.
- Slide gasket onto Double Sealing Ring Installer ( 3383) so that the projecting sealing lip - arrow - faces toward tool.
- Drive on in new shaft seal as far as stop.
- Insert shim - 2 - and tapered roller bearing outer race for differential - 1 - into transmission housing up to stop by hand.
- Replace O-ring - arrow -.
- Insert differential into transmission housing.
- Install final drive cover.
- Tighten bolts on final drive cover in 2 stages in the tightening sequence shown as follows:
- Tighten the bolts - 1 through 3 - hand-tight.
- Tighten bolts - 1 through 12 - in sequence listed to 23 Nm.
- Install right flange shaft.
Further installation is in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Install transmission support. Refer to => [ Left and Right Transmission Supports ] 01V,01VA Transmission.
- Attach the left and right drive axles to the flange shaft.
- Mount the front wheels.
- Fill the gear oil for front final drive => [ Gear Oil in Front Final Drive, Filling after Repair ] Gear Oil in Front Final Drive, Filling After Repair.
- Check and correct ATF level in planetary gearing => [ ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting ] ATF Level In Planetary Gearing, Checking and Correcting.
Tightening Specifications
