Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Crankshaft Seal, Belt Pulley Side
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Seal remover (3203)
• Counter-holder tool (3415)
• Assembly tool (T10053)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
- Bring lock carrier into service position. Refer to => [ Lock Carrier, Moving into Service Position ] Lock Carrier, Moving Into Service Position.
- Remove ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt
- Remove toothed belt. Refer to => [ Toothed Belt ] Service and Repair.
- Remove crankshaft toothed belt sprocket, securing the toothed belt sprocket with Counter-holder tool (3415).
- To guide seal puller, thread center bolt into crankshaft by hand until stop.
- Remove inner part of Seal Remover (3203) 9 rotations (approximately 20 mm) from outer part and secure with knurled-head screw.
- Grease threaded head of Seal Puller (3203), position and screw into oil seal as far as possible with forceful pressure.
- Loosen knurled thumb screw and turn inner portion against crankshaft until the seal is pulled out.
- Tension seal extractor in a vise at mounting points and remove seal with pliers.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Clean the operating and sealing surfaces.
- Before installing, remove oil remains from end of crankshaft with a clean cloth.
- Place Guide Sleeve (T10053/1) on crankshaft pin.
- Push the seal over the guide sleeve onto the end of the crankshaft.
- Press the sealing ring with the toothed belt center bolt from the Assembly Tool (T10053) until it is flush.
- Replace center bolt for toothed belt pulley.
- Install the crankshaft toothed belt sprocket, securing the toothed belt sprocket with Counter Support (3415).
• There must not be any oil on the contact surface between the toothed belt sprocket and crankshaft.
• Do not oil the bolt for crankshaft toothed belt sprocket.
- Install toothed belt (adjust timing) => [ Installing (Adjusting valve timing) ] Service and Repair.
- Install vibration damper. Refer to => [ Vibration Damper ] Vibration Damper.
- Install ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.
- Install lock carrier with attachments. Refer to =>
Radiator Support Radiator Support
- Place the torque support stop on the rubber buffer and tighten the nuts - arrows -.
- Install front bumper cover.
- Check headlamp adjustment.
Tightening Specifications
* Replace bolt.
* 90° corresponds to one quarter rotation.
