Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
COMPONENT NOTES AND INFORMATION
Installing cylinder head cover, refer to Installation. Service and Repair
1 Bolt
- Tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
2 Intake manifold
3 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
4 Cover
5 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
6 Cylinder head bolt
- Always replace
- Tightening, refer to Procedures below.
7 Pressure Relief Valve
- Replace if there are loud valve noises that affect the whole cylinder head
- Replace if loosened in fitting
- Secure with suitable thread locking compound
- 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
8 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
9 Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor housing
10 Cylinder head
- Checking for distortion, refer to Procedure. Testing and Inspection
- Resurfacing dimensions, refer to Resurfacing
11 Cylinder head gasket
- Always replace
- Identification: lettering on gasket must face upward
PROCEDURES
NOTE: Cylinder head installed
- Remove toothed camshaft drive belt.
- Remove camshafts and hydraulic lifters.
- Remove spark plugs.
- Rotate crankshaft by hand to set piston of appropriate cylinder to Bottom Dead Center (BDC).
- Attach compressed air hose to adaptor VW653/3.
- Install adaptor into spark plug hole hand tight
- Apply continuous air pressure of at least 6 bar (87psi).
- Install compressor tool 2036 and adjust to height of studs.
- Remove valve spring using valve lever VW541/1 and adaptor VW541/5 or equivalent.
NOTE: Tight valve keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on valve lever VW541/1 with a hammer.
- Remove valve springs.
- Remove valve stem oil seal with slide hammer 3047 A.
- Fit plastic sleeve over valve keeper grooves on valve stem.
- Oil valve stem oil seal and slide carefully over plastic sleeve and onto valve guide.
CAUTION: Always use the plastic sleeve for installation of valve stem oil seals to protect the seal from being damage by the valve keeper grooves.
