Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair

Camshaft oil seals, replacing

Left and right cylinder head, front

Remove toothed belt, refer to Timing Components/Toothed Belt/Service and Repair Service and Repair
Remove cylinder head cover.
Remove rear toothed belt guard.






Remove seal with seal extractor tool 3240.
Clean bearing and sealing surfaces.

NOTE: Do not oil sealing lip or outer edge of seal before pressing in.

Left front






Press seal in as far as possible using seal installer 3241

Right front

Use pulling sleeve on camshaft
Press seal in flush using 3241

Right cylinder head, rear

Vehicles with vacuum pump






Remove vacuum pump or end cover.
Remove transfer flange.
Disconnect vacuum pump piston from camshaft.
Replace O-ring seals A, B, C, and D
Reinstall piston, transfer flange and vacuum pump
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)

On vehicles with vacuum pump






Remove bolts, spacer and cap locking device.
Remove cap
Replace toroidal sealing ring


Left cylinder head, rear

Remove Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor housing.
Remove bolt from CMP sensor plate.
Carefully pry out sensor plate using screwdriver.






Screw in adaptor 2085/1 for seal extractor






Remove seal using extractor tool 3240 or 2085 and remove adaptor 2085/1.
Clean bearing and sealing surfaces.

NOTE: Do not oil sealing lip or outer edge of seal.

Using insertion tool and sleeve 3241 press seal in fully.
Reinstall CMP sensor plate.
Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft lbs)
