Spiral Spring, Removing, Installing and Checking

Removing

NOTE: When removing and installing the spiral spring, turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.

- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Disconnect airbag power supply harness connector.
- Remove steering column switch trim screws (arrows) and remove upper steering column switch trim.





- Disconnect airbag unit spiral spring harness connector (arrow) located at right side of lower steering column trim.

Using screwdriver gently depress lug in center lower part of connector, and pull connector apart.

- Disconnect airbag unit spiral spring connector (arrow).





- Remove driver's side airbag unit.
- Remove steering wheel.
- Remove screws (arrows), and lock plate -A-.





- Carefully remove spiral spring from rear of steering wheel.

NOTE: The spiral spring must not be twisted during removal.

Installing
- Install in reverse order of removal, use care not to rotate spiral spring during installation.

Checking

NOTE: The spiral spring must only be checked when both ends are disconnected from the airbag system.

- Set digital multimeter Fluke 83 (or equivalent) to resistance measuring range (-).
- Connect multimeter between two terminals of airbag unit harness connectors (inset).





Specification: 0.5-1.2 ohms (continuity)
If resistance is not as specified:
- Replace spiral spring.
