Preparatory work

Note! The vehicle most be lowered when carrying out work.

Remove the airbag. See: Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing Airbag Driver's Side (SRS), Replacing.

Installing the test device

Install the test devices to the connectors for the cables instead of the airbags. The test devices are used so that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are registered when the engine is started.
On model years 2003 and 2004, 2 951 1506 Test dummy 951 1506 Test dummy alternatively 951 1506 version B are used depending on the version the connectors have.
On model year 2005 or later, 951 1506 Test dummy 951 1506 Test dummy and 951 1506 version B is used for the green and violet connector. Use 951 1506 version B for the gray connector that is found on certain vehicles.
Install the battery negative lead. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery, Disconnecting.

Removing the pressure line, applies only to 5 and 6 cylinder engines

Note! The illustration displays previous versions, up to and including 2004. From and including 2005 the pressure pipe is secured by a screw and washer.

Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.

Protect the generator (GEN).
Place paper over the generator (GEN) as protection against oil.
Remove the control module coolant pipe.
Install lock grip pliers on the power steering pump return hose.
Remove the pressure line from the power steering pump.

Removing the pressure line, applies only to 8 cylinder engines

Remove:
- the cover over the engine's front row of cylinders (bank 1) and slightly detach the cover for the rear row of cylinders (bank 2)
- the protective cover over the power steering pump.

Install lock grip pliers on the power steering pump return hose.

Note! Note the position of the delivery pipe.

Place paper around the pressure line on the power steering pump.

Remove:
- the screw (1)
- the nut (2)
- the pressure line from the power steering pump.

Connecting the manometer, applies to model years up to and including 2004

Connect 999 5055 Pressure gauge 999 5055 Pressure gauge version C between the pump and the steering gear pressure hose.
Use: 999 5175 NIPPLE 999 5175 NIPPLE and 999 5319 CLUTCH 999 5319 CLUTCH.
Connect 999 5175 NIPPLE 999 5175 NIPPLE with the pipe screws and the washers from 999 5319 CLUTCH 999 5319 CLUTCH.

Note! Connect the hose from the pressure gauge's valve to the steering gear's pressure hose. The valve should be in a position along the hose.

Remove:
- lock grip pliers
- paper over the generator (GEN).

Connecting the manometer, applies to model years from and including 2005

Connect 999 5055 Pressure gauge 999 5055 Pressure gauge version C between the pump and the steering gear pressure hose.
Use: 999 7179 Adapter 999 7179 Adapter and 999 7180 Adapter 999 7180 Adapter.

Manometer location

Position the manometer in the engine compartment so that it can be read off from the driver's seat.

Checks

Conditions
For control to be as exact as possible the following conditions must be met:
- The vehicle must be equipped with summer tires on the front wheels, with pressures according to the decal on the fuel tank filler cover.
- That the surface beneath the front wheels resembles a dry asphalt metalled road.

Leak checking

Note! Check for leakage in the connections on the power steering pump or on the steering gear before carrying out the measurements below.

Checking the pump capacity

Shut the cock for a maximum of 5 seconds. If the pump is fault-free, the manometer pressure should rise to the correct value: 11.0-12.0 MPa.
The pump must be replaced if the pressure is outside the above values
Switch off the engine.

Checking pump pressure

Left limit position:
- Start the engine.
- Turn the steering wheel to the left. Press the steering wheel to the limit position for a maximum of 5 seconds while reading off the manometer.
- Correct pressure: 11.0-12.0 MPa.

Right limit position:
- Turn the steering wheel to the right limit position and read the manometer according to the previous operation.
If the correct value is not reached there is an internal leak in the steering gear. The steering gear must then be replaced by a new one.

Checking the power steering balance when turning the steering wheel

Start the engine.
Turn the steering wheel to the right limit position and release.
Connect torque wrench 999 8081 TORQUE GAUGE 0-6 Nm 999 8081 TORQUE GAUGE 0-6 Nm to the steering shaft screw and turn to the right with the torque wrench at the limit position to pressure level 1 on the manometer. Release the torque on the steering wheel.
Turn again at the limit position to pressure level 2 on the manometer. Read off the torque.
Repeat the procedure turning the steering wheel to the left.

Note! Do not hold the steering wheel at the limit position for each pressure level for more than 5 seconds.

Pressure level and torque

Standard steering gear:
Level 1 pressure 4 MPa torque interval 2.5-5.5 Nm
Level 2 pressure 8 MPa torque interval 3.0-6.0 Nm

Speed dependent steering gear:
Level 1 pressure 4 MPa torque interval 1.5-4.5 Nm
Level 2 pressure 8 MPa torque interval 2.0-5.0 Nm

Note! If the torque deviation is greater than 0.7 Nm to reach the same pressure the steering gear must be replaced. This applies to both with and without speed dependant steering gear.

Finishing

Disconnect the battery negative lead. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery, Disconnecting.

Remove the test devices 951 1506 Test dummy 951 1506 Test dummy and 951 1506 version B. Install the airbag. See: Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing Airbag Driver's Side (SRS), Replacing.
Disconnect the test instrument.
Install lock grip pliers on the oil pump return hose.

Note! Place paper over the alternator as protection against any oil spill.

Disconnect the test instrument and the nipples.
Connect the pressure line to the pump. Tighten the nut or screw to the pressure line. Tighten to 25 Nm. Use new O-ring.

Remove:
- lock grip pliers
- the paper over the generator (GEN).
Only applies to 5 and 6 cylinder engines
Install the coolant hose for the control module.
Applies to all engine variants
Check the oil level in the reservoir. Use Volvo power steering fluid, P/N 1161529-1 to ensure the correct oil quality.
Start the engine. Check for leakage.
Applies to 8 cylinder engines only

Install:
- the cover over the power steering pump 2 x M6. Tighten
- the covers on the engine's row of cylinders, front (bank 1) and rear (bank 2).
