Checking Battery Charging During Operation
Checking battery charging during operation
Checking battery charging during operation
This fault tracing is designed to ensure that battery (main battery) charging works correctly when the vehicle is in operation.
Note! This fault tracing only applies to vehicles with battery monitoring sensor (BMS).
- Check whether any electrical equipment has been directly connected to the battery's negative terminal. If there is such a connection, it must be removed and connected correctly, not directly to the negative terminal.
Note! If electrical equipment is connected between the battery monitoring sensor (BMS) and the battery, i.e. directly to the negative terminal, the sensor's accuracy for calculating state of charge diminishes.
- Read off the battery's state of charge. For further information see: Description of parameters Description Of Parameters
Note! If the supply to the battery monitoring sensor (BMS) is disconnected and reconnected, the battery's state of charge is set to a default value of 80% until the next calibration. The next calibration is performed when the vehicle has been switched off for at least four hours.
- Allow the engine to idle for 30 minutes. Check that the battery's state of charge increases: How much it increases at this time varies depending on battery age.
- Read off the battery current. Check that the battery current is positive so that the battery actually charges. Low battery current indicates that the battery is old or worn and needs charging for longer.
- Charge the battery fully.
- Inform the customer about the following: The driver's driving pattern affects the battery's state of charge (SoC) and durability. In the event of regular short-distance trips, the battery will not charge enough to keep a high state of charge level. The state of charge then continually decreases. Even the use of power consuming functions such as radios, air conditioning and interior lighting, when the car is not in operation, reduces the battery state of charge level.
