Repair and Diagnosis: Description and Operation
Image philosophy
From and incl. 2006 a new picture philosophy has been introduced in the instructions for mechanical work methods. The instruction shall focus on the pictures. Text is only used if it is impossible to show the work method in pictures.
Color symbols
1. Used for focused component, the component with which you will do something.
2. Used for attachments that are to be removed/installed. May be screws, clips, connectors, etc.
3. Used as extra colors when you need to show or differentiate additional parts.
4. Used for standard tools and special tools.
5. Used as background color for vehicle components.
6. Used when the component is not fully removed from the vehicle but only hung to the side.
Order number
A figure in a circle denotes the order in which the different stages in the picture are to be carried out.
Identification arrows
Arrows that identify parts to be removed.
Designation x2 in an arrow indicates that two screws shall be removed to loosen the brake caliper.
All attachments covered by a quantity designation are of the same type and size.
Movement arrows
In this instance the movement arrows are numbered to denote the order in which you should push or pull the component.
Rotation arrows show that you should turn the part to install or remove it.
Angled movement arrows indicate that the component should first be moved in one direction, and then in another direction.
In this instance the movement arrows are numbered to denote the order in which you should push or pull the component.
Background components
Background details are often deleted to make the picture clearer.
Views
To make the picture clearer, views are sometimes chosen showing parts from an angle that is different than the angle you see the part when working on the vehicle. E.g., this is done to show hidden screws.
When working on the bevel gear, it is possible that you see it from this angle when it is installed in the car.
