Rear seat entertainment module (RSE)
Note! Wired headset not supplied by Volvo.
The rear seat entertainment system is supplied with electric power and is controlled by the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) (16/109).
The system is powered via a 30 supply. If the system is in operation and the ignition is switched off and a door is opened, the system switches off.
When the vehicle is started, each screen must be started manually using the button under the relevant screen. Then the screens can be switched off and on via the keypad on the Climate control module (CCM).
Via the keypad on the Climate control module (CCM) it is possible ti choose which of the screens is to be controlled and which screen is to show the image from the selected image source. It is also possible to lock playback of programmes that are not suitable for certain ages.
When the ignition is switched on the Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) performs a basic internal system check and starts the start-up procedure with the screens.
For further information, see: System start-up procedure Programming and Relearning
If the system is to be switched on using the remote control, the ignition must be switched on and the remote control must be pointed at one of the screens before any buttons are depressed, the receiver for the signals from the remote control is located on the lower edge of the screens.
To control a screen with the remote control, the relevant screen must be selected via a button on the remote control (Left, Front, Right). Select Front to control the Climate control module (CCM).
If, for example, you press a menu selection button, a menu opens on the screen at which the remote control was aimed. The possible selections are described below:
- Independent shifting of three audio/video inputs (DVD, TV (if installed) and AUX).
- Image adjustment (image color, brightness, contrast and aspect ratio).
- Audio settings (bass, treble and volume).
- Language selection for on-screen instructions.
- Switch individual screens ON/OFF.
- Service menu to reach settings such as selection of region code, TV receiver, etc.
The rear seat entertainment module (RSE) also determines which media source has been linked to the selected screen and forwards the commands in the suitable protocol.
If, for example, the left screen is set for DVD-playback and an infrared play command is detected at the left screen, the message is received, saved and forwarded to the DVD-player (16/109) in the DVD-player's infrared protocol.
A fixed memory saves the displayed instruction language used and the current audio and video settings for the respective output channel. These settings are loaded upon start-up with the exception of volume level, which is set to low as standard.
When a DVD disc is inserted in the opening DVD playback starts automatically if the DVD disc does not have a disc menu.
DVD playback can resume from a paused position, for example, if the ignition was switched off when watching a movie. In this case playback continues from the last position when the ignition is switched on again. The audio and video signals are fed out from the DVD player from the connection block (ISO connection) at the rear of the device.
Infrared (IR) control
Each screen houses an infrared receiver. The IR receivers are directly connected to the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) (16/109) and are activated when the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) is supplied power. When a button is pressed on the remote control, it emits a signal with infrared light (IR). The coding of this signal varies depending on which button was pressed. The IR signal is received by the IR receiver below the respective head restraint screen (16/164 (left), 16/165 (right)) and is forwarded to the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) for processing.
It is also possible to control the Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) via the keypad on the Climate control module (CCM). Using Parental Control the command from the keypad on the Climate control module (CCM) is processed before the command from the remote control.
Control via remote controls is achieved by first selecting left or right screen or Integrated Audio Module (IAM). Depending on which of the two screens that received the command, the Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) selects A/V or audio source for the screen. Then the other screen is selected to also select source for that screen.
Headphones
Two pairs of headphones are supplied with the system as standard. The transfer of sound between the screen and the wireless headphones takes place using an infrared signal (IR). Any number of headphones can be connected provided that they are within the working range of the IR transmitters.
There must be a clear path between the transmitter on the lower edge of the screen and the receiver on the side of the headphones. If the path is blocked the signals may be disrupted and the audio quality impaired.
The headphones are switched on with the switch located on the side. The headphones switch off automatically if no IR signal is received for 3-4 minutes.
The headphones also have a button to set which audio channel to listen to. Channels A or B can be selected. Channel A is always transmitted from the left screen and channel B is always transmitted from the right screen.
Note! The audio signal from the screens to the headphones has a fixed sound level. This means the headphone volume can only be adjusted using the knob on the headphones.
