Condition
To prevent the gear selector inadvertently being moved out of position P, there is an electrically controlled lock function (shift-lock). The Gear selector module (GSM) communicates with the Transmission control module (TCM) via an internal network, Local Interconnect Network (LIN). The Gear selector module (GSM) manages, among other things, the shift-lock function, manual shifting (+/-) and indication for the selected gear position on the gear selector's top panel.
There is a hall sensor installed internally in the gear selector assembly's control module. The hall sensor is affected by a permanent magnet located on the gear selector assembly. When the gear selector is moved out of position P, with the ignition on, the hall sensor is deactivated and the shift-lock solenoid is deactivated. This is done to prevent the gear selector catching in position N. With the ignition off and the gear selector in position P, the gear selector is locked mechanically as a result of the power to the solenoid having been cut. The gear selector is also locked in ignition positions I and 0.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that:
- The solenoid's driver stage is active when it should be inactive.
- Transmission control module (TCM) has indicated gear position R, N or D and the Hall sensor has been active for 10 seconds.
The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:
- Ignition switch position II.

Note! The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.
