-------------------------------------------------

Checking fuel tank system
Two methods can be used to check the tank system:
1. Checking the fuel tank system using smoke equipment (Recommended)
2. Checking the fuel tank system using pressurization and soapy water.
Carry out the leakage test according to option 2 if smoke equipment is not available.

1 - Checking the fuel tank system using smoke equipment

2 - Checking the fuel tank system using pressurization and soapy water

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the fuel tank system using smoke equipment
Use the smoke equipment to locate any leaks.
Fuel tank system, check Fuel Tank System, Check
If no leakage can be found in the fuel tank system after the above checks and corrective action but the fault remains after the quick test, the leak diagnostic unit may be defective.
Run a quick test of the fuel tank system after the above checks and corrective action to check if the fault is still present.

Checking the fuel tank system using pressurization and soapy water

Warning! First read: Safety regulations for handling fuel Safety Regulations For Handling Fuel

Hint: The fault may be due to leakage in the fuel tank, fuel filler pipe, fuel tank filler cap, evaporative emission (EVAP) canister, EVAP canister purge valve, leak diagnostic unit or in the hoses between these components.

- Ignition off
- Pressurize the tank system to find the leak. Test pressurizing the tank system Test Pressurizing the Tank System
When the fuel tank system is pressurized:
Check the fuel tank system for leakage by spraying soap solution on the components for the fuel tank system, such as the tank, fuel filler pipe, fuel tank filler cap, EVAP canister purge valve, EVAP canister and the hoses and hose terminals between these components.
Remedy as necessary.
Install components, hoses etc.
If no leakage can be found in the fuel tank system after the above checks and corrective action but the fault remains after the quick test, the leak diagnostic unit may be defective.
Run a quick test of the fuel tank system after the above checks and corrective action to check if the fault is still present.

Other information

Continue - Activating the quick test of the fuel tank system

-------------------------------------------------

Activating the quick test of the fuel tank system
- Switch off the ignition to ensure that the status of the quick test for the fuel tank system is "Not completed". The test cannot be started if the status is "Completed"
- Ignition on
- Activate the quick test of the fuel tank system
- Read off the battery voltage, the status of the quick test of the fuel tank system and the status of the test phase. Check the parameters according to the conditions for starting the quick test of the fuel tank system.

Note! The following conditions must be met in order for the quick test of the fuel tank system to be run correctly.
Conditions for the quick test of the fuel tank system to start:
- There must be no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored for the evaporative emission system (EVAP) and valve or leak diagnostic unit
- Engine off, ignition on
- The battery voltage must be 11-14 V
- The status of the test phase must be "Not running".
- The status of the quick test for the fuel tank system must be "Not completed".

Note! The battery voltage must be correct throughout the entire test. The test can take up to 10 minutes depending on the amount of fuel in the tank. Connect a battery charger if necessary.

- Activate the quick test for the fuel tank system by clicking the start button. Click the stop button to cancel the test.
Check that the quick test has started by reading off the status of the test phase. The test has started when the status of the test phase is "Reference".
Wait until the test is complete. When the test is completed, the status of the test phase must be "Not running" and the status of the quick test for the fuel tank system must be "Completed".
If no faults are detected after the quick test of the fuel tank system, the test result for the leak diagnostic unit and the fuel tank system will be "No fault found". If the estimated leakage is very near the diagnostic trouble code limit (greater than 0.3mm), troubleshooting should probably be performed despite the Tank system, test result shows "No leakage found", especially if a diagnostic trouble code for leakage has been stored earlier.
If a fault is detected after the quick test of the fuel tank system is complete, the test result for the fuel tank system or leak diagnostic unit will be "Fault found" with the corresponding relevant diagnostic trouble code (DTC), depending on the fault.

Hint: A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for the fault will be stored in the engine control module (ECM) if the test result is "Fault found".

Note! In the event of a warranty claim the results from the estimated leakage must be entered in repair order text!

Select an alternative to continue when the test is completed:
1. All test results are OK, "No fault found".
2. The test result for the fuel tank system, major leak (ECM-439C) or minor leak (ECM-434C) is "Fault found".
3. The quick test does not start or the test result for the leak diagnostic unit (ECM-436X) is "Fault found".

-------------------------------------------------

Fault-tracing information:
- The engine control module (ECM) cannot run the leak diagnostic by activating the quick test of the fuel tank system. This may be because the conditions for starting the quick test of the fuel tank system have not been met, because the fault occurred during fault-tracing or because the fault existed before the fault-tracing began. Check that all conditions for starting the quick test of the fuel tank system are met and that all hoses, connectors, components etc are correctly reinstalled and undamaged
- The quick test for the fuel tank system cannot be run if the battery voltage varies too much. The voltage may vary if the battery is being charged with a battery charger. Charge the battery before beginning the quick test to avoid voltage variations.

Hint: Cancel fault-tracing for this fault. Then read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the vehicle communication socket. Fault trace any other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the engine control module (ECM).

- Remedy as necessary.
Select a suitable alternative to continue:
1. Start this fault-tracing from the beginning
2. Cancel fault-tracing for this fault.

1 - Checking other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), engine control module (ECM)

2 - No Fault Found

-------------------------------------------------

Intermittent fault
The engine control module (ECM) has previously detected a leak in the fuel tank system but the fault is not active at present. The fault may be due to leakage in the fuel tank, fuel filler pipe, fuel tank filler cap, evaporative emission system (EVAP) canister, EVAP canister purge valve, leak diagnostic unit or in the hoses between these components.
