NOTE! THIS DOCUMENT SUPERSEDES THE PREVIOUS RETAILER TECHNICAL
JOURNAL 17644 DATED 07-23-2012. The chassis numbers in the header have changed. The part number for the new bushing has been added. A new step in the procedure has been added.
DESCRIPTION:
The customer may complain about a groaning or clonking noise from the front suspension of the vehicle, especially when turning or driving over speed hump.
The root cause may be that the rear bushings in the subframe have smaller contact areas, allowing the support plate to rub against the bushings front and rear nubs, refer to picture 1 in the attachment.
PRODUCT MODIFICATION:
A new subframe bushing with blue color was introduced in production as a running change from week 2009w11 (see chassis range in header) on all variants (excluding S80 V8). The new bushing has a wider contact area to the support plate which result in a slightly stiffer suspension and less rubbing between the support plate and the bushings front and rear nubs, refer to picture 4 in the attachment, red marked area.
SERVICE:
Use chassis ears (if available) to locate the noise.
Note:
If a hard metallic knocking noise can be heard from the rear subframe bushings, fault trace according to RTJ 17385.
Note! Service solution is not applicable to S80 V8 or XC60.
If the customer complaints about a groaning, squeaking or a clonking noise from the front suspension, and if the bushings show wear signs according to picture 1,2,3 in the attachment, then replace the rear bushings in the front subframe according to VIDA.
Note!
If the noise continues with the blue bushings, remove the front and rear nubs using a file / rasp, according to picture 5 in the attachment.
