Checking Wireless Headphones, Rear Seat Entertainment, Generation 4.3
Checking wireless headphones
Fault-tracing information
The wireless headsets can be used for both display screens. The sound to the headsets is transferred from the display screens, via infrared signals (IR), to the headsets in two channel stereo format. If the headsets do not function the fault could be due to:
- The headsets (Infra-red receiver in the headsets)
- Headset batteries discharged.
- Blocked path for infrared signals to the headsets.
- Damaged IR-transmitter/head rest.
- Leads between Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) and screens are damaged.
Note! In order for sound from the system for rear seat entertainment to be heard in the headsets, the system for rear seat entertainment must be on and work faultlessly.

Checking the headsets
Hint: To obtain a certain audio source - insert a CD in the DVD-player, press the Play button, and select DVD as source on the screen where troubleshooting is to be performed.
Checking the settings
Check that the volume on each headset is turned down.
Check that the sound source for the selected headset channel and the headsets are on. Sound that is sent from left screen is always channel A in the headphones, and sound that is sent from right screen is always channel B in the headphones.
Checking the infra-red transmitter/head restraint and infra-red receiver/headsets
Check that the infra-red transmitter/head restraint is not obstructed. In certain cases moisture can impair infra-red signal reception.
Also check that the receiver in the headsets is not obstructed.
Check that the IR-diodes at the bottom on the screen light up dimly when the system is on and that there is a sound source. If the IR-diodes are not lit up, the system will play some form of media, the circuit board in the head restraint is probably damaged.
Checking the headsets
Check the headset batteries.
Check to see if the other headset functions. If this is the case the headsets are defective.
Checking audio leads for screen
Check if the malfunction only is at one screen or if the malfunction is present at both screens. If the problem only occurs at one screen - change place between both headrests and see if the problem comes along.
Check that it is only the wireless headphones that do not work. If there is no sound from the vehicle's ordinary loudspeakers, the fault may be in the rear seat entertainment module (RSE). Before replacing the control module, ensure that all other relevant symptom tests have been carried out.
Check that the connector between Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) and both screens is installed correctly and that it is not damaged.
Check the leads for audio signals from Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) to respective screen. There are three audio leads for each screen, one for left audio channel, one for right audio channel and a ground connection which is common for both audio channels. Regards the cables from rear seat entertainment module (RSE), terminals #E6, #E7 and #E8 for left display screen as well as terminals #E18, #E19 and #E20 for right display screen.
Conclusion
- If no problem can be found on the cables to the screens and it is only from one screen that sound cannot be played, but sound from Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) can be listened to from other places - try changing circuit board in the head restraint where the sound does not work.
- If no malfunction can be found on the leads to the screens, none of the screens can give sound to the headphones but sound from Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) can be heard from other places - try replacing Rear seat entertainment module (RSE).
- If sound is not heard from the front audio system or in the wireless headsets, there may be a fault in the Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE). Before replacing the control module, ensure that all other relevant symptom tests have been carried out.
Remedy as necessary.
