Checking TV reception and TV receiver

Fault-tracing information
Digital TV-receiver (DVB-T) is an extra option that receives the digital TV-channels, converts them and transmits them on to rear seat entertainment module (RSE). For the TV-receiver to be able to receive transmitted channels, two antennas are connected to the receiver. The TV receiver is operated by the remote control via the rear seat entertainment module (RSE).

No TV-picture is shown or no TV-sound is heard.
- No power supply or ground to TV receiver.
- Damaged TV receiver fuse.
- Damaged cables for audio and video signals between the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) and the TV receiver.
- Damaged wake-up signal cables between the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) and TV receiver.
- The rear seat entertainment module (RSE) is not programmed for a TV receiver.

TV picture appears, but quality is poor.
- Weak or distorted antenna signal.
- Damaged cables between the TV receiver and the antennas.
- Damaged antennas.

Not possible to change channels with the remote control.
- Damaged cables for remote control's IR signals between the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) and the TV receiver.

TV channels deleted.
- Switch on the TV receiver is in the wrong position.

Message about software update is shown.
- Switch on the TV receiver is in the wrong position.

Note! In order for TV-channels to be shown in the system for rear seat entertainment, the system for rear seat entertainment must be on and in other respects work trouble-free.

Checking the wiring and component
Check that the TV-receiver's extra fuse is trouble-free.

Hint: Check that the TV-receiver's indicator diode is turned on when the ignition is turned on. If the LED indicators come on, the power supply, ground connection and wake-up signal are OK. The indicator diode is only on during start-up of the system as well as when the system is on. For further information, see VIDA Design and function.

Check the lead for voltage feed to the TV-receiver's 26-pin connector #26 for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground and open circuit. The voltage should be approx. the same as the battery voltage.
Check the lead for ground connection to the TV-receiver's 26-pin connector #13 for open circuit and short-circuiting to voltage. Also check the ground terminal. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.
Check the lead for the wake-up signal to the TV-receiver's 26-pin connector #25 for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground and open circuit. When rear seat entertainment module (RSE) sends wake-up signal the voltage shall be approx. 9 V. For further information, see Signal description.
Check that rear seat entertainment module (RSE) is programmed for TV-receiver. If the vehicle is vehicle is equipped with TV receiver and the control unit has been replaced, the control unit setting must be changed. For settings, see owner's manual.

If there is a picture but no audio
Check the leads for sound between TV-receiver and rear seat entertainment module (RSE) for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground and open circuit. Refers to leads to rear seat entertainment module (RSE), connections #C3, #C4, and #C5.

If there is a picture but no audio
Check the leads for video signals between the TV-receiver and rear seat entertainment module (RSE) for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground, and open circuit. Refers to leads to rear seat entertainment module (RSE), connections #C1 and #C2.
For further information, see the wiring diagram.

Symptom selection

Select one of the following options
1. No TV-picture is shown or no TV-sound is heard.
2. TV picture appears, but quality is poor.
3. Not possible to change channels with the remote control.
4. TV channels deleted. Message about software update is shown.

2 - Checking signal for TV-picture

3 - Checking control of TV-receiver with remote control

4 - Checking setting of switch TV-receiver

-------------------------------------------------

Checking signal for TV-picture
The antenna's direction and the current receiver conditions are decisive to the picture's quality. If the picture deteriorates or disappears, if the audio is choppy or some of the channels disappear, it is likely due to a weak antenna signal. The signal is affected by factors such as terrain formations, weather conditions and vehicle position in relation to the TV transmitter. The problem could show up in conjunction with transfers, seasonal changes and types of weather.
Check that the antenna's leads are correctly connected to the TV-receiver and that the leads to the antennas are trouble-free.

Hint: The antenna gets voltage feed and ground from the TV-receiver. Supplied 5 V via the antenna cable's intermediate conductor and grounded via the cable screening. Under the casing of each antenna, there is an indicator LED that lights when the digital TV receiver is on and the antenna is OK. If the system is ON and the LED does not light, the fault lies in the antenna, its cables or the power supply/ground from the TV receiver.

For further information, see the wiring diagram.

Checking control of TV-receiver with remote control

Note! If the remote control does not work with the rest of the system, stop this fault tracing.

The TV receiver is operated by the remote control via the rear seat entertainment module (RSE).
Check the leads for the infrared signals between the TV-receiver's 6-pin connector, #1 and #3, and rear seat entertainment module (RSE), #D15 and #D25, for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground, and open circuit.
For further information, see the wiring diagram.

-------------------------------------------------

Checking setting of switch TV-receiver
The TV receiver has two small switches located next to the program card slot.

The following settings are possible:
1. Normal position.
2. Mode for software update.
3. Mode for erasing programmed TV-channels.
4. Mode for changing signal standard between PAL and NTSC.
If a customer comes in with his/her vehicle and complains of any of the following, the positions of the TV receiver switches should be checked.
- A menu about software update is always shown in the screens at TV-display.
- The stored TV-channels are always erased and a message is shown.
Under normal conditions, the switches must always be in the Normal position.

Verification

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off.
- Restore components and connectors.
- Switch on the ignition. Lighting in the DVD-player's buttons is activated. If the TV receiver is installed, the receiver's LED lights up.
- When start-up is performed the lighting in the DVD-player's buttons goes off, does not apply to POWER-button. If the TV receiver is installed, the receiver's LED goes out.

Note! A long start-up time indicates a fault in communication with the screens. For further information, see VIDA Design and function.

- Start the system using the POWER button on the DVD player or the remote control. Use the buttons, on both DVD-player and remote control, to operate the system.

Check that:
- The screens show a picture.
- DVD-disc can be played.
- Sound is heard in wireless headphones.
- Sound can be heard in the vehicle's speakers.
- Menus can be accessed with the remote control in both screens.
- TV picture appears (if TV receiver is installed) and it is possible to change channels.
- If possible, connect an external source to the AV input and test the function.

Is the function OK?
