Fuel Tank System, Check

Fuel tank system, check

Note! This instruction is deliberately written for use with different types of leak detecting equipment. Therefore certain components may differ on different equipment.

Safety
First read Safety regulations for handling fuel Safety Regulations For Handling Fuel.

Note! Follow the safety precautions for the equipment. Follow the instructions for connecting, disconnecting, use and maintenance.

Hint: Be aware of the risks of igniting the fuel. Do not let the temperature of the tank fall below 0 °C when carrying out checks.

Caution! Never leave the car unattended with the tank system pressurized

Preparation
Ignition off.
Seal the intake air hose for the carbon filter container. (A rubber plug is sufficient on certain models.)
Expose the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve.
Disconnect the hose (1) between the carbon filter container and the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve.

Determine the size of the leak
Calibrate the equipment in relation to the definition of a major or minor leak for the relevant vehicle. See the instructions provided by the equipment supplier.
Connect the leak detecting equipment hose for gas to the detached hose.
Pressurize the fuel tank system. Check the result against the default value to determine the size of the leak.

Hint: The supplier's instructions often contain useful tips to facilitate carrying out checks.

Complete pressurization.

Locating leakage
Connect the leak detecting equipment hose for smoke to the detached hose.
Fill the tank system with smoke. The time taken to fill the system depends on the size and volume of the system, and the performance of the equipment.
Visually check the evaporative emission (EVAP) system, using a halogen and / or UV lamp.

Hint: The supplier's instructions often contain useful tips to facilitate leak tracing.

Stop filling with smoke.

Resetting
Reinstall the hose between the carbon filter container and evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve.
Install the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve.
Remove the seal at the intake air hose for the carbon filter container.
