Shift Cable: Service and Repair

Gearshift cable

Note! Some variation in the illustrations may occur, but the essential information is always correct.

Special tools:

Removal






Remove the following items:
- battery negative lead.
- the battery
- the box for the battery.






Remove the following items:
- the ball joints. Use: 999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar
- the sleeves for the gear selector cables from the transmission cable bracket.






Remove the following items:
- the 4 plastic nuts
- the mounting for the muffler
- the nut behind the three-way catalytic converter (TWC).





Note! Take care with the heat shield. Do not deform the heat shield.

Move the heat shield backwards. This will make the entrance for the gear selector cables into the passenger compartment visible.




Remove the gear selector cables from the clip in the transmission tunnel.

Remove the cables from the gearshift lever assembly. See: Refer to: Gear selector assembly, B5254T7, M66 Gear Selector Assembly





Fold the carpet out of the way on both sides of the center console. The lead-in for the gear selector cables is on the floor, in front of the heater unit.





Hint: The insulation panel can be torn in half at the gear cables' lead-in. Take the insulation panel out in two parts, an upper and a lower.

Remove the sound insulation panel.





Hint: Use a ring wrench with a lock function.

Remove the 2 nuts for the gear selector cable lead-in from either side of the center console. Unhook the lead-in from the studs in the floor.

Remove the gear selector cables.

Installation

Note! Tightening torque. Refer to: Tightening torque, B5254T7, AW55-50/51SN, B5254T7, M66 Tightening Torque

Note! When installing cables: Be careful to ensure that there are no sharp bends or kinks in the cable, especially between the inner cable and outer sleeve.





Place the cables in position through the floor, up to the transmission.





Install the two M6 nuts for the gear selector lever lead-in. Tighten.

Note! If the sound insulation panel is split, tape it together. Ensure that the parts are correctly located.

Install the following items:
- the sound insulation panel
- the floor carpets.

Install the gear selector cables on the gearshift lever assembly. Refer to: Gear selector assembly, B5254T7, M66 Gear Selector Assembly






Note! Tighten the cables as illustrated.

Install the gear selector cables in the clip in the transmission tunnel.





Note! Take care with the heat shield. Do not deform the heat shield.

Install the following items:
- the heat shield
- the 4 plastic nuts
- the mounting for the muffler
- the nut behind the three-way catalytic converter (TWC).






Install the following items:
- the sleeves for the gear selector cables in the transmission cable bracket
- the ball joints.





Make sure that the gearshift cable is locked in position before fitting the clip. Press the clip into place as illustrated.




Check that the clip is positioned in the groove as illustrated.

Adjust the gearshift cables. Refer to: Transmission cable, adjusting, B5254T7, M66 Adjustments






Install the following items:
- the box for the battery
- the battery
- battery negative lead.
