Preparatory work
Removing center tunnel console
Remove center console. See: Floor console Floor Console.
Removal
Removing the splash guard
Remove the cover over the engine control module (ECM).
Removing the gear selector cable from the bracket
Remove the gear selector cable from the bracket on the transaxle. Use special tool 999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar. Do not damage the ball.
Preparations for installation
To make reinstallation easier secure a cable using tape to the end of the mechanical cable before pulling it out.
Disconnecting front heat shield
Remove:
- the 4 plastic nuts
- the mounting for the muffler
- the nut behind the three-way catalytic converter (TWC).
Note! Take care with the heat shield. Do not deform the heat shield too much.
Move the heat shield backwards. This will make the entrance for the gear selector cable into the passenger compartment visible.
Disconnect the gear selector cable from the clip in the transmission tunnel.
Removing the gear selector cable from the gear selector assembly
Fold the carpet out of the way on both sides of the center console. The lead-in for the gear selector cable is on the floor, in front of the heater unit.
Hint: The insulation panel can be torn at the gear selector cable mounting. Take the insulation panel out in 2 parts, an upper and a lower.
Hint: Use a ring wrench with a lock function.
Remove the 2 nuts for the gear selector cable lead-in from either side of the center console.
Unhook the lead-in from the bolts in the floor.
Disconnect the cable from the end of the gear selector assembly. Pull back the locking sleeve.
Note! Hold as close to the ball joint as possible. Do this by hand.
Route sufficient cable into the passenger compartment that it is possible to work the cable off the ball joint.
Remove the gear selector cable.
Installation
Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque, B5254T7, AW55-50/51SN, B5254T7, M66 Tightening Torque.
Installing the gear selector cable
Tape the gear selector cable in place in the pre-routed cable. Insert the gear selector cable a little way through the hole in the floor.
Hint: Ask someone to pull the gear selector cable to assist you.
Install:
- the gear selector cable on the end of the gear selector assembly. Press the ball joint into place.
Installing service clips
Note! The automatic transmission has a gear selector cable while the manual transmission has two gear selector cables.
Ensure that the gear selector cable is engaged before fitting the blue clip. Press the clip into position as illustrated.
Check that the clip is positioned in the groove as illustrated.
- the nuts.
- the insulation panel
Note! If it is split, tape it together. Ensure that the parts are correctly located.
- the floor carpets.
- the gear selector cable on the clip in the transmission tunnel.
Note! Take care with the heat shield. Do not deform the heat shield too much.
Install:
- the heat deflector plate and the 4 plastic nuts
- the mounting for the muffler
- the nut behind the three-way catalytic converter (TWC).
- the gear selector cable on the bracket. Press the ball joint into place.
- the engine control module (ECM) cover.
Installing service clips
Note! The automatic transmission has a gear selector cable while the manual transmission has two gear selector cables.
Ensure that the gear selector cable is engaged before fitting the blue clip. Press the clip into position as illustrated.
Check that the clip is positioned in the groove as illustrated.
Finishing
Adjusting the gear selector cable
Adjust the gear selector cable according to: Gear selector cable, adjusting, B5254T7, AW55-50/51SN Adjustments.
Installing the center console
Install the center console. See: Floor console Floor Console.
Check the function.
