Transaxle Oil
Transaxle oil
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Warning! Avoid skin contact with the transmission oil.
Caution! Use only transmission oil, Volvo part no. 116 1540-8 (1litre container), 116 1640-6 (4 litre container).
Conditions
Changing the oil
The capacity of the transmission is 7.65± 0.15 liters. (MAX, MIN).
Note! This volume applies to a completely new transmission that has never been filled before.
The oil should be replaced only in the two following instances:
Where diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) TCM 0042 and TCM 0046 are stored, in which case the diagnostic function activates the warning lamp in the following circumstances.
The transmission control module (TCM) receives data about the operating temperature of the transmission fluid while the vehicle is being driven. TCM 0042 is stored after an accumulated amount of time.
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM 0046 is stored if the transmission fluid temperature has exceeded 150 °C for more than 2 minutes.
On vehicles used in continuous taxi service and / or used to tow a trailer or caravan for most of its mileage, the oil should be changed according to the service program.
Warning! The oil may be very hot if the vehicle has just been driven. Avoid skin contact.
Draining oil
Remove:
- the splash guard under the engine
- the oil plug. Drain the oil into a container.
Tighten the plug. See: Tightening torque, B5254T7, AW55-50/51SN, B5254T7, M66 Tightening Torque.
The splashguard under the engine is installed later when the work is complete.
Connecting hoses
Remove the oil line (1) between the transmission cover and the oil cooler.
Hint: The quick-release connectors for the oil line are detached by pressing the clutch housing towards the cover/oil cooler. Hold the connection housing in this position. Pull back the lugs on the connection housing. Pull the connector off the cover/oil cooler.
Connect a hose (2) to the return pipe sleeve connector on the cover. This hose is used to fill with oil.
Install a transparent plastic hose (3) on the oil cooler connecting sleeve, which runs down into a container.
Filling with transmission fluid
Apply the parking brake. Move the gear selector lever to position P.
Fill approximately 2 liters of oil through the hose connected to the transmission cover.
Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle so that the oil pump for the transmission pumps out the oil. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.
Fill approximately 2 liters of oil again as described above. Start the engine again. Allow the engine to idle so that the oil pump for the transmission pumps out the oil. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.
Further filling of transmission oil
Fill approximately 2 liters of oil through the hose connected to the transmission cover.
Remove the hoses from the oil cooler and the transmission cover.
Connect the oil line between the oil cooler and the transmission cover.
Checking the oil level
Check the oil level. See: Transmission oil level - checking, B5254T7, AW55-50/51SN Checking Oil Level.
Note! After changing the transmission oil, the "Transmission oil change" counter must be reset. See: Resetting the counter for "Transmission oil change".
