DESCRIPTION:

There might be a knocking or rattling noise from the front struts when driving on uneven road or over speed bumps. Analysis has found some possible failure modes:

- Front coil spring in conflict with body strut tower (see RTJ 21323).
- Defective top bearing mainly due to separation of the top bearing and loss of ball bearings. Note that this could occur when replacing other parts in the front strut such as the spring aid (TJ 8708).

There may be a slight grinding noise when rotating a loose top bearing but it is not heard when the top bearing is installed in the vehicle since the bearing is under pressure.

Rotating the bearing without pressure will provoke a noise that is normal.
Rotating the bearing while applying some pressure and listening for noise is the proper way to diagnose the bearing.

SERVICE:

For a squeaking noise first refer to RTJ 8708 (spring aid) and RTJ 20109 (control arm hydro bushing).

For a rattling or knocking noise first refer to RTJ 21323 (coil spring in conflict with strut tower).

Check that all parts in the front strut are correctly assembled and that there are no loose connections. If needed use Chassis Ears toolkit to localize the noise.

Analysis of returned parts has shown that there is usually no need to replace the top bearing unless it has been accidently opened and the ball bearings have been lost. In that case replace the top bearing PN 31262470. See Figure 1 in the attachment.
