Steering gear

Preparatory work
Set the steering wheel to the "straight ahead" position, and remove the key so that the steering lock engages.
Remove the soundproofing panel. See: Instrument panel lower Instrument Panel Lower.
Measuring the position of the steering gear
Remove the left front wheel.
On one side, measure the length of the tie rod in relation to the steering gear housing.
Note the measurement.
Removing the steering shaft from the steering gear
Remove:
- 1 screw
- the steering shaft from the steering gear.
Removing the sub-frame
Remove the sub-frame.
Removing steering gear
Remove the screw.
Pull out and plug the pipes.
Slacken off the 1 nut for the outer steering arm so that the upper edge is above the screw on both sides.
Press the steering joint out of the wheel spindle. Use: 951 2945 Puller 951 2945 Puller.

Installing steering gear
Note! For tightening torques, see Tightening torque [1][2]Specifications
Install:
- the steering gear
- the outer steering arms in the wheel spindles
- the M10 nuts for the outer steering arms
- the pipes. Use new O-rings
- 1 M8 screw.
Installing the sub-frame
Install the sub-frame.
Installing the steering shaft on the steering gear
Check that the position of the new steering gear is the same as the old steering gear.
Install:
- the steering shaft on the steering gear
- 1 M8 screw.
Finishing
Install:
- the left front wheel. See: Wheels Service and Repair
- the soundproofing panel. See: Instrument panel lower Instrument Panel Lower.
Fill the power steering system.
Note! Use Volvo power steering fluid with part number 1161 529 (1 l).
Bleed by turning the steering to full lock, alternately left and right, until the steering feels right.
