Checking the fitting of the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) shows that the steering wheel angle sensor may be incorrectly installed. It is extremely important that the contact reel/steering wheel angle sensor is installed correctly. If the unit is installed with the turning central section one turn out of place, full steering lock can break internal components. If this has occurred, replace the contact reel.
- Ignition off.
- Align the wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the steering wheel.
Check that the white markings are visible in the contact reel window when the wheels are in the straight ahead position. If the steering wheel angle is incorrect the contact roller shall be adjusted so that the white marking is visible in the contact roller's window when the contact roller's lock screw is located in the correct position.

Note! The diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for steering wheel buttons are stored if the ignition key is turned to ignition position II when the steering wheel is removed.

Remedy as necessary.

Check the Steering Wheel Module (SWM)
The Steering Wheel Module (SWM) has registered an internal fault.

Hint: The steering wheel angle sensor is integrated in the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) and cannot be replaced as a separate unit.

If the fault is intermittent, it has been registered previously but is no longer present. Intermittent malfunctions may be due to interference at start-up of the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) or may be another type of recurring problem. The fault is evaluated depending on how it occurs. If the fault recurs, replace the control module.
Replace the steering wheel module (SWM) in the event of a permanent fault.
Remedy as necessary.

Checking the control module

- Ignition off.
- Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.
- Ignition on.
- Turn the steering wheel to the limit position in both directions.
- Read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is intermittent, this means that the cause of the fault has been found. If the fault is permanent, replace the control module.
