Cylinder head/gasket, cylinder 2, 4, 6 and 8 (Bank 2), replacing






Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Preparatory work

Disconnect the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
This work requires the vehicle to be raised. see:
Jacking points, body Service and Repair.

Exposing

Removing the variable valve timing (VVT) unit
Remove the VVT units. See: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing.

Removing components
Remove the cable harness from the engine bracket by opening the catches for the mounting.

Remove:
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- the vacuum valve, place to one side.




Remove the hose clip for the coolant hose.





Remove:
- the M6 screw.
- the heat shield.




Remove the M8 upper mounting screw for the alternator.

Removing the manifold
- the catalytic converter according to: Three-way catalytic converter (TWC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair




Remove the screws, 2 x M8




Remove the 8 x M8 nuts. Discard the gasket.

Removal

Removing the cylinder head
When replacing/working on the cylinder head. Lift out the valve lifters. Use a magnet or suction cup. Note location.

Note! Be careful so that the contact faces of the parts are not damaged.

Remove:
- the 10 x M12 screws
- the cylinder head. Discard the gasket.

Cleaning


Clean and check the gasket faces for:
- the coolant bypass channel
- the intake manifold
- the cylinder block
- camshaft cover.

Note! Blow the oil ducts clean.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque, B8444S [1][2]Specifications.

Installing the cylinder head

Note! Check that all studs at the exhaust ports are tightened. See: Tightening torque, B8444S [1][2]Specifications.




Install new manifold gasket.
Lubricate the studs with paste, part no. 116 1408.

Install:
- new cylinder head gasket. Apply sealing compound 307 57050 on both sides. See the illustration.
- the cylinder head
- lubricated screws, use new screws.
Tighten the screws in a circle from the inside and outwards. Use protractor: 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor. Tighten. See Tightening torque, B8444S [1][2]Specifications.

Installing the valve lifters

Note! If the cylinder head has been replaced, the valve clearance must be adjusted. See Valve clearance, setting/adjusting, B8444S Valve Clearance, Setting/Adjusting.

Install:
- lubricate and install all the valve lifters. For correct location see earlier notes.

Installing the manifold





Install:
- a new gasket
- new nuts, 8 x M8.





Install:
- the 2 x M8 screws
- the three-way catalytic converter. See: Three-way catalytic converter (TWC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair.

Installing components

Install:
- the heat shield
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- secure the cable harness on the engine bracket using the catches for the mounting.
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- the vacuum valve
- the hose clip for the coolant hose.

Installing VVT-units
