Shift Cable: Service and Repair






Gear selector cables, replacing

Special tools:

Note! Since the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information is always correct.

Removal

Removing the air cleaner (ACL) housing




Remove the screws (1) for the intake manifold.
Disconnect the hose clamp (2) for the air hose.
Remove the connector (3) from the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing from its mountings. Pull it straight up.

Removing the gear selector cable and ball joint




Remove the gear selector cable from the bracket on the transmission by pressing back the lock sleeve around the gear selector cable and lifting upwards. Use: 999 7077 Jimmy bar 999 7077 Jimmy Bar to release the ball joint for the gear selector cable from the lever.

Removing the left front wheel




Remove the left front wheel. Pry the clips apart. Remove the gear selector cable from the clips on the side member.
Remove the mounting for the brake hose and brake pipe.

Removing side panels




Remove the side panels from the centre console.
Remove the center console. See Center console, replacing Service and Repair.

Removing the gear selector cable




Detach the gear selector lever stop. See Gear selector lever assembly Geartronic, replacing, B8444S, TF-80SC AWD, B6324S5, TF-80SC AWD, B6324S5, TF-80SC Gear Selector Lever Assembly Geartronic, Replacing.

Remove:
- the catch for the gear selector cable on the gear selector.




- the mechanical gearbox cable from the gear selector assembly nose. Press the catches. Use a screwdriver
- the mechanical gear selector cable.

Vehicle with rear A/C

Applies to all vehicles.

Removing the gear selector cable at the bulkhead





Remove:
- the 2 air ducts
- the 4 screws for the strut in the dashboard. Push the carpet to one side
- the 2 nuts for the gear selector cable grommet at the bulkhead
- the gear selector cable by pulling it inwards into the passenger compartment.

Hint: Secure a cable using tape at the end of the engine compartment on the gear selector cable before pulling it out to make reinstallation easier. Route the gear selector cable correctly in the engine compartment with someone to assist you.

Installation

Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque Mechanical Specifications.

Preparations for installation




Tape the cable to the new gear selector cable.

Caution! Take great care when installing the gear selector cables so that no sharp bends or breaks occur, especially in the ends of the gear selector cables between the inner cable and the outer casing.

Hint: Route the gear selector cable correctly in the engine compartment with someone to assist you.

Installing the gear selector cable from the inside of the passenger compartment




Install the gear selector cable under the heater unit on the left-hand side, down towards the hole.

Caution! Be very careful when inserting the rubber bellow for the gear selector cable through the hole in the bulkhead. Do not damage the cable.

Feed the gear selector cable through the hole slightly.

Hint: Route the gear selector cable correctly in the engine compartment with someone to assist you.

Locate the lead-in on the studs.

Install:
- the nuts. Tighten
- the air ducts
- the stay and the screws. Tighten.

Feeding in the gear selector cable from the inside




Pull the cable while feeding the gear selector cable in from the inside.
The gear selector cable must be routed past the steering gear and up to the gearbox bracket.
Secure the gear selector cable in the clips on the side member.

Installing the gear selector cable on the gear selector





Install:
- the gear selector cable on the gear selector, lock using the snap ring
- the gear selector cable on the end of the gear selector assembly.
Reinstall the gear selector lever stop. See Gear selector lever assembly Geartronic, replacing, B8444S, TF-80SC AWD, B6324S5, TF-80SC AWD, B6324S5, TF-80SC Gear Selector Lever Assembly Geartronic, Replacing.

Installing the gear selector cable on the gearbox





Install:
- the gear selector cable to the bracket by pressing the locking sleeve back around the gear selector cable and inserting the cable in the bottom of the bracket.
- the gear selector cable on the lever. Press the ball joint for the gear selector cable into place on the throttle spindle.

Note! After the gear selector cable is replaced, it must be adjusted according to.

Installing the air cleaner (ACL) housing





Install:
- The air cleaner (ACL) housing
- the connector (3) for the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
- the hose clamp (2) for the air hose
- the screws (1) for the intake manifold.
