Cylinder head/gasket, cylinder 2, 4, 6 and 8 (Bank 2), replacing
Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Preparatory work
Disconnect the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
This work requires the vehicle to be raised. see:
Jacking points, body Service and Repair.
Exposing
Removing the variable valve timing (VVT) unit
Remove the VVT units. See: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing.
Removing components
Remove the cable harness from the engine bracket by opening the catches for the mounting.
Remove:
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- the vacuum valve, place to one side.
Remove the hose clip for the coolant hose.
Remove:
- the M6 screw.
- the heat shield.
Remove the M8 upper mounting screw for the alternator.
Removing the manifold
- the catalytic converter according to: Three-way catalytic converter (TWC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair
Remove the screws, 2 x M8
Remove the 8 x M8 nuts. Discard the gasket.
Removal
Removing the cylinder head
When replacing/working on the cylinder head. Lift out the valve lifters. Use a magnet or suction cup. Note location.
Note! Be careful so that the contact faces of the parts are not damaged.
Remove:
- the 10 x M12 screws
- the cylinder head. Discard the gasket.
Cleaning
Clean and check the gasket faces for:
- the coolant bypass channel
- the intake manifold
- the cylinder block
- camshaft cover.
Note! Blow the oil ducts clean.
Installation
Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.
Installing the cylinder head
Note! Check that all studs at the exhaust ports are tightened. See: Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.
Install new manifold gasket.
Lubricate the studs with paste, part no. 116 1408.
Install:
- new cylinder head gasket. Apply sealing compound 307 57050 on both sides. See the illustration.
- the cylinder head
- lubricated screws, use new screws.
Tighten the screws in a circle from the inside and outwards. Use protractor: 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor. Tighten. See Tightening torque, B8444S Tightening Torque.
Installing the valve lifters
Note! If the cylinder head has been replaced, the valve clearance must be adjusted. See Valve clearance, setting/adjusting, B8444S Valve Clearance, Setting/Adjusting.
Install:
- lubricate and install all the valve lifters. For correct location see earlier notes.
Installing the manifold
Install:
- a new gasket
- new nuts, 8 x M8.
Install:
- the 2 x M8 screws
- the three-way catalytic converter. See: Three-way catalytic converter (TWC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair.
Installing components
Install:
- the heat shield
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- secure the cable harness on the engine bracket using the catches for the mounting.
- the connector for the camshaft position sensor
- the vacuum valve
- the hose clip for the coolant hose.
Installing VVT-units
Install the VVT units. See: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing.
