Cylinder head/gasket, cylinder 1, 3, 5 and 7 (Bank 1), replacing






Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Preparatory work

Disconnect the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.
This work requires that the vehicle be raised. See Jacking points, body Service and Repair.

Remove:
- the VVT units. See: VVT unit intake camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Intake Camshaft, Replacing and VVT unit exhaust camshaft, replacing , B8444S VVT Unit Exhaust Camshaft, Replacing
- the engine cooling fan (FC). See Engine cooling fan (FC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair
- the temperature sensor, see: Temperature sensor engine coolant, replacing, B8444S Service and Repair.

Exposing

Exposing the cylinder head, cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7 (Bank 1)

Remove:
- the hose clamp for the upper coolant hose, place the coolant hose to one side.
- the 2 x connectors for the camshaft position (CMP) sensors




Remove the coolant hoses and place them to one side.





Remove the 2 x M8 upper screws holding the water pump.






Remove:
- the M8 screw.
- the 2 x M8 nuts
- 2 x M8 studs.

Removing the manifold




Remove the 2 x M8 screws holding the bracket to the manifold.




Remove the 8 x M8 nuts holding the flanged joint to the manifold. Discard the gasket!

Removal

When replacing or working on the cylinder head
Lift out the lifters using a magnet or suction cup. Note positions.

Note! Do not damage the mating surfaces.

Removing the cylinder head

remove
- the 10 x M12 screws
- the cylinder head. Discard the gasket.
- the gasket in the coolant's "bypass channel".

Note! Do not damage the mating surfaces.

Cleaning


Clean and check the gasket faces for:
- the coolant bypass channel
- the intake manifold
- the cylinder block
- camshaft cover.
Carefully blow the oil ducts clean.

Installation

Installing the cylinder head





Note! Check that all studs at the exhaust ports are tightened.

Install:
- a new manifold gasket. Lubricate the studs using paste: 116 1408
- a new cylinder head gasket. Apply sealing compound 307 57050 to both sides. See the illustration.
- the cylinder head
- lubricated screws, use new screws.
Tighten the screws in a circle from the inside and outwards. Use protractor: 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor. Tighten.

Installing the valve lifters

Note! If the cylinder head has been replaced, the valve clearance must be adjusted. See Valve clearance, setting/adjusting, B8444S Valve Clearance, Setting/Adjusting.

Lubricate and install all the valve lifters. For correct location see earlier notes.

Installing the manifold

Note! To ensure that there is no exhaust leakage, see: Flanged joint, assembling Removal and Replacement.





Install:
- a new gasket
- the exhaust manifold
- the new nuts , x 8. Tighten.




Install the 2 x M8 screws for the bracket.

Installing components

Install:
- the M8 screw.
- the 2 x M8 nuts
- the 2 x M8 studs. Tighten
- the upper 2 x M8 screws for the water pump.
- 2 x coolant hoses. Tighten the hose clamps
- the upper coolant hose. Tighten the hose clamp

Install:

- the engine cooling fan (FC). See Engine cooling fan (FC), replacing, B8444S Service and Repair
