DESCRIPTION:
During a software download (SWDL) the DEM micro controller might fail. The symptom will be a "dead" DEM on the Controller Area Network (CAN). If the DEM has no communication for 5 seconds after the ignition is switched to position 2 some other control units might set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for "No communication" with the DEM.
PRODUCT MODIFICATION:
The new DEM with new Primary Boot Loader (PBL) was introduced during structure week 2009 week 25 for plant code 21 and during structure week 2009 week 26 for plant code 22. See chassis ranges in the header. Note that the plant code can be found in the 11th digit of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). A "1" in the 11th digit of the VIN indicates that the vehicle was built in plant 21 and a "2" in the 11th digit of the VIN indicates that the vehicle was built in plant 22.
SERVICE:
Check the DEM through VIDA/SoftWare/Advanced/Send Prog. Choose DEM and try to read Hardware number or Serial number. If this is not possible make sure that the power supply to DEM is OK.
If the power supply is OK and there is still no communication with the DEM replace the DEM according to VIDA.
