DESCRIPTION:
Customers may complain of either or both of two noises (listed below) from the power steering system. The noises could be coming from the steering gear and are routed into the passenger compartment via the steering column. Replacement of the steering gear will not solve the noise.
Customers may complain of a hissing noise from the steering column with the engine at idle and up to 1200-1500 RPM.
Customers may complain of a rumbling noise from the steering column around 30-40 KPH (19-25 MPH) on a cobblestone type road surface. The steering column starts to vibrate and then the rumbling noise starts.

MY 2007: Install a damping mass PN
30793972 using screws (4 x PN 986858) on
the steering column according to the picture.
Torque: 3 Nm = 2.2 ft.lbs. = 26.5 in.lbs.
Distance: 1 mm = .039 in
MY 2008 2009: Replace the steering column
