Standard locking function
Note! The market in Japan has Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) regardless of if the vehicle is equipped with keyless entry system or not. When the vehicle is not equipped with keyless entry system, the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) communicates directly with Central electronic module (CEM).
The lock function that is active when the car is delivered depends on the market. The system can be configured for total unlocking or 2 step unlocking.
Total unlocking means that all side doors unlock and that the tailgate can be opened by activating the switch on the tailgate.
During 2 stage unlocking, only the driver's door is unlocked first. If the remote key is pressed again within 10 seconds, the other doors are unlocked.
The vehicle is normally unlocked by pressing the remote key's unlock button. This also deactivates the alarm if installed. The vehicle can also be unlocked using the key blade in the remote key. Unlocking using the key blade should be seen as a last resort. If the car is unlocked with the key blade, the alarm will be triggered. The alarm can then be reset by inserting the remote key in the starter module.
Lock function with deadlocking (market dependent)
If lock units with deadlocking are installed, there is an additional lock motor in each lock unit. The function of this lock motor is to mechanically disengage the inner door handle. Deadlocking is activated automatically 10 seconds after the vehicle was locked. It will not then be possible to open a side door from the inside, even if a window is smashed. This also means that anyone still in the vehicle when it is locked cannot get out. This function can be deactivated using the reduced alarm function.

Valet locking of the cargo compartment and glove compartment (option)
Valet locking is used to block access to the glove compartment, cargo compartment and certain functions in the car.
The key blade must be taken out of the remote key to activate this function. The function is activated by locking the glove compartment in the normal way using the key blade (turning 0 to 90 degrees) and then continuing to turn from (90 to 180 degrees). This sets the glove compartment and tailgate to privacy mode and blocks the phone module (PHM) for outgoing calls if installed.
A text message in the driver information module (DIM) indicates that the lock is active. The tailgate can now not be unlocked using the remote key or the central locking switches in the doors. The key blade is kept by the customer and the remote control can be handed to valet parking attendants or workshop staff who need access to the vehicle.
This function is deactivated by inserting the key blade in the lock cylinder in the glove compartment and turning it back a quarter of a turn (from 180 to 90 degrees). The tailgate can then be unlocked again using the remote key, central locking switch or the switch on the light switch module (LSM).
Electrical child-proof lock (option)
The electrical child-proof locking function involves an additional lock motor in each rear lock unit. The lock motor disengages the inner door handle on each rear door so that the door cannot be opened from the inside. The central electronic module (CEM) also deactivates the rear electrical window lift mechanisms while the function is activated. This function is activated using a switch on the control panel in the driver's door. The control panel is serially connected via LIN to the driver door module (DDM). The switch has an alternating function which engages or disengages the function every other time the switch is pressed. The activation switch has a built-in LED to indicate activated function. A message is also shown in the display in the driver information module (DIM).
The central electronic module (CEM) receives information from the rear door control modules, via the front door control modules, that the lock motors have reached their locked position. The position of the lock motors using a contact breaker in the lock unit. The function for child-proof locks can be activated or deactivated in all ignition positions and up to 1 minute after the remote key has been removed from the starter module. During deactivation, the inner door handles are re-engaged and the rear power window lift mechanisms are activated. The LED in the switch goes out and the driver information module (DIM) displays a message indicating that the function had been deactivated.
A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored in the central electronic module (CEM) if the indication from the lock motors is incorrect or missing, or if deactivation or activation fails. A message is also shown in the driver information module (DIM).
Opening the tailgate

The tailgate can be opened in three ways:
- via the handle on the outside of the tailgate
- via the button on the remote key
- via the switch on the Light switch module (LSM)

The tailgate can be unlocked using the switch on the Light switch module (LSM). When the switch is pressed in, a signal is transmitted to the Central electronic module (CEM) which activates the locking/unlocking motor. When the lock is unlocked and the handle pressed in, the catches release from the striker plate in the body and the tailgate opens. The handle on the tailgate affects the catch in the tailgate lock unit mechanically via a wire.
The locking/unlocking motor in the tailgate lock unit is directly connected to the Central electronic module (CEM) and Power Operated Tailgate Module (POT) (option).
The switch in the tailgate handle is directly connected to the central electronic module (CEM). The handle on the tailgate affects the catch in the tailgate lock unit mechanically via a wire. The tailgate does not open if privacy locking is activated.
When the lock is unlocked and the handle pressed in, the catches release from the striker plate in the body and the tailgate opens.
There is a switch in the tailgate lock unit, which indicates whether the tailgate is locked or not. If the lock in the tailgate is activated twice without the switch in the lock unit indicating that the tailgate is locked/unlocked, a DTC is stored in the Central electronic module (CEM).
The button on the remote key can be used to unlock the tailgate even if the rest of the vehicle is locked.
The tailgate cannot be unlocked if the vehicle speed is greater than 7 km/h (5 mph) or if privacy locking is activated.
Locking/opening fuel tank filler cover
The switch for opening the fuel tank filler cover is in the light switch module (LSM). The light switch module (LSM) is serially connected, via LIN, to the central electronic module (CEM) and transmits a signal to the central electronic module (CEM) when the switch is pressed. The lock motor is directly connected to the central electronic module (CEM).
When the central electronic module (CEM) receives a signal indicating that the switch has been pressed, the central electronic module (CEM) powers the lock motor, which starts to operate. The lock motor has a spring-loaded piston which returns to its original position after a fully completed cycle. This means that the lock motor only needs to operate in one direction. When the fuel tank filler cover is closed, it is locked.
Fuel tank filler cover opening has a delay of 1 second as certain markets (USA/CDN) have automatic fuel leak detection installed.
When the switch is pressed, a signal is transmitted to the Engine control module (ECM) to stop fuel leak diagnostics. The delay is so that the fuel tank has time to eliminate the over pressure before the fuel tank filler cover is removed.
Light functions
The interior lighting is checked by the central electronic module (CEM). The interior lighting comes on when the vehicle is unlocked.

There are also functions for external lights:
- approach lighting
- approach lights.
Local lighting
Local lighting is activated using the remote key. The following light when activated:
- interior lighting
- parking lights
- license plate lighting
- door mirror lighting (option).
During initial setting of the lighting it is lit for 30 seconds or until the remote key is inserted in to the starter module. This time can be adapted to the wishes of the customer.
Approach lights
There is a function for approach lights as part of the lighting system. When the engine is off, the remote key is removed from the starter module and the dip switch is activated, the following lights:
- low beam
- parking lights
- fog lamps
- interior lighting.
The default setting for the lighting is 30 seconds. This time can be adapted to the wishes of the customer.
Customer settings
The duration that the local lighting and approach lights are on can be adapted to the wishes of the customer. See: Diagnostic functions Diagnostic Functions
Indication of the status of the doors, lock motors and hatches
There are two or three contact breakers in the lock units in the side doors:
- contact breaker which indicates if the door is not completely closed
- contact breaker to indicate that the central locking motor is in the locked position
- contact breaker which indicates that the child-proof lock motor is in its locked position (rear doors only).
There are two contact breakers in the tailgate lock unit:
- contact breaker to indicate whether the lock is locked or not
- contact breaker which indicates that the tailgate is closed.
The contact breakers are connected directly to the central electronic module (CEM) from all doors.
Contact breaker for central locking motor indication, and consequently contact breaker for child-proof lock motor, for the rear doors, are connected to their respective rear control module. The rear door control modules transmit the signal on to the relevant control module in the front doors which forward the signal to the central electronic module (CEM).
The signals are used to generate error messages and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) if a door is not properly closed when the vehicle is driven or if locking or unlocking of one or more doors has failed one or more times.
Note! There is no contact breaker for indicating an activated lock motor for deadlocks. The system only operates in the event of a change in status from the last position.
There is only one contact breaker in the lock unit in the tailgate. This indicates whether the tailgate is open or closed.
Remote unlocking
The vehicle can be unlocked remotely via the Volvo On Call service. If the remote keys have been locked in the car or lost, the customer can call a Volvo Service Center. The customer must provide a code to the Service Center, which then transmits a signal to the vehicle. This message unlocks the tailgate and when the tailgate is opened within the specified time interval, the rest of the vehicle unlocks.
The function is market dependent.
Automatic locking when driving
Whether the automatic locking function is activated on delivery or not is market dependent. The function is deactivated at the factory. The setting can be changed via the menu in the Infotainment control module (ICM).
If this function is activated, the side doors and tailgate lock when the speed exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph). This is on the condition that all side doors and tailgate are closed, the engine is running and the vehicle is moving forward. Information about whether the engine is running or not is discovered by the Central electronic module (CEM) via a calculation of different signals that are transmitted from other control modules to the Central electronic module (CEM), e.g. key position.
Indication about whether the engine drives the vehicle forward differs between vehicles with a manual or automatic transmission.
On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the gear selector position is obtained from the Transmission control module (TCM). The gear selector must not be in P or N in order for automatic locking to work.
On vehicles with a manual transmission, the Central electronic module (CEM) receives information about the vehicle's speed from the Brake control module (BCM). At the same time the accelerator pedal must be partially affected in order for locking to be carried out.
The door can be unlocked again as normal using the central locking switches.
Automatic re-locking after unlocking
If the car is unlocked using the remote key or key blade and the side doors or tailgate are not opened within 2 minutes, the vehicle will be locked automatically.
Remote key warning (USA/CAN only)
Remote key warning alerts the driver, by means of a text message and an audible acknowledgement signal, not to leave the remote key in the vehicle.
The central electronic module (CEM) receives an indication from a contact breaker in the lock unit that the driver's door is open. The contact breaker is directly connected to the central electronic module (CEM). If a remote key is in the starter module when the driver's door is opened and the engine is switched of the central electronic module (CEM) transmits a message via the controller area network (CAN) to the driver information module (DIM). The driver information module (DIM) then activates an audible acknowledgement signal and shows a warning message in the text display.
Comfort" functions
The Comfort Closing function can be activated from the remote key and from the central locking switch on one of the front doors. If the central electronic module (CEM) receives repeated lock signals, corresponding to a pressed lock button for approximately 2 seconds, it will lock all doors as well as closing the windows and sunroof.
The corresponding function (Comfort Opening) is available when unlocking the vehicle. If the central electronic module (CEM) receives repeated unlock signals, corresponding to a pressed unlock button for approximately 3 seconds, it will unlock all doors and open all windows and the sunroof.
