Steering Angle Limiter: Service and Repair

Steering deflection limiter

Steering deflection limiter

There are two types of power steering

Figure A depicts ZF and figure B depicts Visteon

- Identify the type of power steering on the car in question.

For cars with 8-cylinder engine
- Slacken the screws of the radiation guard at the right side of the steering servo and move it aside to be able to later access and fasten the new clamp.

For cars with Visteon power steering
- Undo the clamps from the dust excluder on the steering servo and pull it aside to expose the joint between the rack and the inner track rod end. The kit contains a new, big clamp.

For cars with Visteon power steering
- When installing a spacer washer for the power steering, use the kit with part no. 30793188.

Note! If there is already a washer mounted, remove it and replace it with the washer from the kit.

- Take the spacer washer T= 7.5 mm (19/64 ") from the kit and press it onto the rack.
- Slide the washer toward the joint between the rack and the inner track rod end (Figure B).

Installing the power steering dust excluder

For cars with Visteon power steering
- Take a new clamp from the kit and fasten it on the dust excluder.

Note! Only use the clamps from the respective kit.

Hint: Slightly compress the large clamp with the pliers before fitting the dust excluder and clamp. This makes it easier to grip it with the pliers when the dust excluder is positioned. Do not compress so much that the dust excluder and clamp cannot be pressed on.

- Press the dust excluder and clamp onto the power steering and make sure it is properly positioned.
- Tighten the clamp.

- Position the dust excluder properly on the track rod end and make sure it ends up in the groove.
- Refit the little clamp to the dust excluder.
- Repeat steps 4-8 for the other side.

For cars with ZF power steering
Note! All clamps and dust excluders must be replaced when installing a steering deflection limiter on cars with ZF power steering. Use the kit with part no. 30776252.

- Undo the clamps from the dust excluder on the steering servo and move it aside to expose the joint between the rack and the inner track rod end.
- Undo the inner track rod end from the power steering's rack. Use the information in VIDA under group "wheel suspension, steering, removing inner track rod end".
- Discard the clamps and dust excluders. There are new ones in the kit.

For cars with ZF power steering
- When installing a steering deflection limiter on cars with this type of power steering, there is always a washer fitted. This is to be removed and replaced with the washer from the kit. Use the kit with part no. 30793189
- Remove the existing washer from the rack and fit a new T= 17.5 mm (11/16 ") from the kit. The washer can only be fitted one way.

For cars with ZF power steering
- Reinstall the inner track rod end on the power steering's rack. Use the information in VIDA under group "wheel suspension, steering, removing inner track rod end".
- Use new clamps and dust excluders from the kit.
- Repeat steps 9-11 for the other side.

For cars with 8-cylinder engine
- Reinstall the radiation guard and tighten the screws to 10 Nm (7.5 lb.ft.).
