Description:
Bearing noise from gear drive housing that is most noticeable around 1500 - 1800 rpm in neutral gear. This may be due to a faulty carrier bearing for the idler gear drive.
Service:
Verify that the noise actually comes from the gear housing using a stethoscope. Replace the idler shaft gear set following the replacement procedure below.
Removal of the alternator
To remove the alternator,see:

Removal of the inner timing cover
To remove the inner timing cover, see:

Remove the 7 screws holding the gear housing.
Use: Pliers, 9995670.
To remove the gear housing from the engine block pry at the lugs.
Important!
The components are machined together. If a component is damaged, both components must be replaced at the same time.
To ensure that the locking pin is removed at the same time, screw a self-tapping screw (4 mm) into the locking pin (1).
Use: Extractor, 9997315. Screw, 2 pcs, M8 x 25 (2) Use the nut (3) and carefully pull out the unit. Check that the locking pin is included.
Note:
Do not substitute tool (9997315) with any other puller or method. Any damage occurring to the sealing surface of the gear housing will result in a leak.
Important!
Take extra care when handling this component.
Note!
Inspect the locking pin after removal. If the locking pin is broken in the engine block, the shaft has worn in its bearing position, which means that the engine block must be scrapped.
Installation
Note!
Ensure that the contact surfaces are clean and free of foreign material.
Blind cover plug. (30731886)
Use: Chemical gasket, 1161771, as illustrated.
Install:
- blind cover plug (1)
- secure by deforming the washer as illustrated (2)
Use a screwdriver.
Important!

Use: Mandrel, 9997316.

Ensure that the guide sleeves are in position.
Note!
Only finger tighten the bolts at this stage.
Note!
To ensure that there is no leakage at the screw (1) in the image, loosen the screw (1) and apply Thread sealing 1161056 to the screwed joint.
Tighten according to the order in the image.
Tightening torque:
- Step 1: Gear housing,
10 Nm (88 inch pounds)
- Step 2: Gear housing,
24 Nm (212 inch pounds)
