Shifter stuck in Geartronic mode

DESCRIPTION:
Plastic residue on the shifter fork (see photo above) may prevent the shifter from returning to D (drive) mode from Geartronic mode. This will also prevent the car from going into park or neutral so if the engine is shut off, the engine will not be able to be restarted.
This condition can be seen on the shifter fork in the photo above to the left. An assembled shifter fork without plastic residue can be seen above to the right.
This will not allow the rocker pivot pin to sit in its place and the retaining spring can pop out of the detents. The photo above shows the pin sticking up due to residue underneath it and also shows the locks that are not locked into place.
See arrow in the photo above which point to undamaged locks in their proper position.
The photos above show the retaining spring in the correct position (left) and incorrect position (right).
SERVICE:
The plastic residue on the fork can be shaved off. The rocker arm assembly should be replaced.
