Occupant weight sensor (OWS), checking
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
System description
System description of the Occupant weight sensor (OWS)
The occupant weight sensor (OWS) has a pressure sensor/ cushion filled with silicon located under the front seat cushion of the passenger seat.
Caution! Silicon can:
- damage surrounding materials
- interfere with the functions of electrical components
- make the application of paint and adhesive difficult.
Check
General
Any leakage from the occupant weight sensor (OWS) can be detected by a visual check of the passenger seat and surrounding area. Sticky transparent stains in the area may indicate silicon leakage.
Leakage can also be detected when handling the passenger seat.
The SRS (supplemental restraint system) indicator lamp in the combined instrument panel is activated when approximately 30% of the silicon has leaked out of the pressure sensor/ cushion. The capacity is approximately 500 g silicon.
Checking for leakage
Remove the front passenger seat. See: Front seat, replacing Front Seat, Replacing.
Take the front seat to a secluded location in the workshop, away from the body and paint shop.
Remove the pressure sensor/cushion. See: Occupant weight sensor (OWS), replacing Removal and Replacement.
Check if the pressure sensor/cushion is sticky anywhere; If this is the case, silicon is leaking.
Caution! The leaking pressure sensor/cushion must be placed in a plastic bag and sealed with tape. The plastic bag must be disposed of according to the workshop procedure for silicon waste.
Corrective action
Corrective action in event of leakage
Clean/decontaminate after silicon leakage. See: Occupant weight sensor (OWS), cleaning Procedures.
Corrective action in the event of non-leaking pressure sensor, cushion
Install the pressure sensor/cushion. See: Occupant weight sensor (OWS), replacing Removal and Replacement.
Caution! Store the ID number for the occupant weight sensor (OWS). See VIDA vehicle communication.
Warning! Calibrate the Occupant weight sensor (OWS). See VIDA vehicle communication.
