Checking the system, digital versatile disc player and screens

Fault-tracing information

If the system cannot be turned on and no screen is lit up and the malfunction cannot be connected to a special function, e.g., that the AUX-input is used, the cause of the malfunction may be:
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals.
- One or both screens not connected.
- Open-circuit in leads between screen and rear seat entertainment module (RSE).
- Voltage supply to the screen or Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE).
- Damaged screen.

If the DVD player does not work but other audio/picture sources work, the problem may be due to:
- Damaged dvd-disc.

If none or only one of the screens work, and this is not associated to a certain function in the system, the probable cause may be:
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals.
- Open circuit on signal cable.
- Power supply missing
- Damaged screen.
- Open-circuit or short-circuit in the cable for the control area network (CAN).

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the power supply and ground terminals
If lighting in the buttons does not come on at all, this indicates malfunction of the voltage feed or ground for the rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player.
Check the lead for voltage feed to rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player's #A4, #A6 and #A7 for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground and open circuit. The voltage should be approx. the same as the battery voltage.

Hint: Power supply (15 feed) is common with power supply to rear 12 V socket.

Check the lead for ground connection to rear seat entertainment module (RSE), connector #A8, for open circuit and short-circuit to voltage. Also check the ground terminal. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.
Check the connector for rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player contact resistance and oxidation.

Information

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - FAULT-TRACING FAILED

No - Attempt New Test

Fault-tracing information
When the ignition is on, the rear seat entertainment module (RSE) performs a simple internal system-check and starts the start-up procedure with the screens.
- Ignition on. Lighting in the DVD-player's buttons is activated.
- When start-up is performed the lighting in the DVD-player's buttons goes off, does not apply to POWER-button. For more information, see Design and Function.

Check how illumination of the function buttons behaves during start-up and then select the alternative described below. The specified times are to be considered guidelines, not exact times.
1. Lighting in the DVD-player's buttons is not activated at all with ignition on.
2. DVD player button illumination comes on. Goes out in all buttons except the POWER button after 4-10 seconds.
3. DVD player button illumination comes on. Goes out in all buttons except the POWER button after 15-35 seconds.
4. DVD player button illumination comes on. Goes out in all buttons only in brief intervals every 10 seconds.

Hint: That the lighting in the function buttons goes out after approx. 10 seconds, means that the screens are supplied with voltage and grounded as well as that Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) (DVD-player) has established contact with both screens on the internal CAN-net. This also means that the circuit boards behind the screens in both head restraints work as intended.

Select alternative according to above.

1 - Checking the power supply and ground terminals

2 - Checking the power supply to the control module

3 - Checking voltage feed and ground for screens

4 - Checking wake-up signal

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the power supply to the control module
- Turn on the system with the main switch on the DVD-player.
- Lighting in all of the DVD-player's buttons shall now be activated and remain on.

Hint: If lighting in all of the DVD-player's buttons is activated, and then goes off after approx. 5-10 seconds, this indicates lost 15-feed to rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player.

Does lighting stay on?

Yes - Checking the display screens

No - Checking the wiring and terminals

-------------------------------------------------

Checking voltage feed and ground for screens
Rear seat entertainment module (RSE) (DVD-player) has not established contact with one or both screens. Whatever the case is, can be indicated by how long time the start has taken.

Note! If one of the screens does not respond but the other does, start-up takes about 15-25 seconds. If none of the screens respond, then start-up takes approx. 30-35 seconds.

The specified times are to be considered guidelines, not exact times.

Hint: Turn on the system with the main switch on the DVD-player. The screen that does not have contact with the control module (DVD-player) will not light up. If the power supply and ground to the screen are working properly but the screen has no contact with the rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD player via the CAN network, the screen will come on in LOCAL mode at start-up. Then neither sound will be heard nor picture shown at playback from DVD-player to this screen. This indicates a malfunction of either the wake-up signal or CAN-communication.

Take measurements for the screen that is not communicating.
Check the voltage feed from rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player to screens, #E1 (left screen) and #E13 (right screen), for short-circuiting to ground and open circuit. The voltage must be approximately battery voltage when the ignition is on.
Check the ground connection from rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player to screens, #E12 (left screen) and #E24 (right screen), for short-circuiting to voltage and open circuit.
Check the connector for rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player as well as screens for loose contact, contact resistance and oxidation.

Hint: If a screen is not working, try switching places between the screens/head restraints. If the malfunction remains, this indicates a malfunction either in the leads between the screen's circuit board and the display itself or in the display itself.

Was a fault detected?

Yes - Verification

No - Checking wake-up signal

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the wiring and terminals
Check the lead for voltage feed (15-feed) to rear seat entertainment module (RSE)/DVD-player's #A6 and #A7 for short-circuiting to voltage, short-circuiting to ground and open circuit.

Hint: Power supply (15 feed) is common with power supply to rear 12 V socket.

Note! When this feed is lost, the system will only work for another approx. 10 minutes. The system cannot be restarted until the power supply is OK. If no cable or fuse defects are found and there still is no power supply, the problem probably lies in the vehicle electrical system.

For more information, see wiring diagram and signal description.

Verification

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off.
- Restore components and connectors.
- Switch on the ignition. Lighting in the DVD-player's buttons is activated.
- When start-up is performed the lighting in the DVD-player's buttons goes off, does not apply to POWER-button.

Note! A long start-up time indicates a fault in communication with the screens. For further information, see VIDA Design and function.

- Start the system using the POWER button on the DVD player or the remote control. Use the buttons, on both DVD-player and remote control, to operate the system.

Check that:
- The screens show a picture.
- DVD-disc can be played.
- Sound is heard in wireless headphones.
- Sound can be heard in the vehicle's speakers.
- Menus can be accessed with the remote control in both screens.
- If possible, connect an external source to the AV input and test the function.

Is the function OK?

Yes - Fault Found

No - Fault-tracing information

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the display screens
- Turn on the system with the main switch on the DVD-player.
- Lighting in all of the DVD-player's buttons shall now be activated and remain on.
- Now the screens shall be activated.

Do the screens come on?

Yes - Checking the remote control

No - Checking the components and wiring

Checking the components and wiring

Checking the components and wiring

Hint: If only one of the screens lights up, try installing the screen that is not working in the head restraint where the working screen was installed. Then restart the system by turning it off, switching off the ignition and then switching the ignition on again. Turn on the system with the main switch on the DVD-player. If the malfunction remains, this indicates a malfunction either in the leads between the screen's circuit board and the display itself or in the display itself.

If necessary, test with a new circuit card or a new display.
