DESCRIPTION:
To address a customer complaint of squeaking noise when depressing/releasing the clutch pedal, replace the over-center spring.
The return spring does not need to be replaced for this symptom. The new one included in the kit can be discarded.
The over-center spring comes pre-greased. Try to leave as much of the grease in place as possible when installing it.
SERVICE:
1. Remove the panel from behind the center stack using a weatherstrip tool (9814071).
2. Remove the cover from the left end of the dashboard.
3. Remove the three screws from the panel beneath the steering column.
4. Remove the passenger compartment temperature sensor from the panel by pushing it forward.
5. Pull the panel down and out. Unplug the courtesy light.
6. The over-center spring is now visible.
The left lug is in a groove (1).
The right lug is in a seat which opens upwards (2).
The end of the spring contacts the clutch pedal arm (3).
7. Be sure to wear safety glasses for the rest of this procedure.
Position the Spring Holder next to the spring and partially depress the clutch pedal. When the pedal is depressed approximately 1/3 of its travel, the spring is fully compressed. Slip the holder over the spring.
Depress the pedal the rest of the way and remove the spring & holder together from the car.
8. Using pliers or a vise, carefully compress the spring slightly and remove the holder.
9. Position the new spring in a vise with soft jaws. Make sure the spring is positioned so that the center-pin is not damaged. Compress the spring just enough to get the holder to begin to slide over it.
10. Use pliers to slide the spring the rest of the way into the holder. Wrap a plastic tie-strap around the tool & spring to make sure the spring stays in the tool during installation (tie-strap not shown in this drawing).
11. Position the spring in place. Depress the clutch pedal until the spring has shifted up to its correct position. Work the 2 lugs into their seats.
Depress the pedal completely and position the clutch pedal arm onto the end of the spring. Cut and remove the plastic tie-strap.
Release the clutch pedal approximately two-thirds and remove holder.
Check the clutch pedal function and re-install the interior panels.
