Fuel pump draining method

DESCRIPTION

The fuel pumps in the above-referenced models differ from the fuel pumps in other Volvo models in that they have an integral fuel filter. If the pump is replaced, before it is discarded or shipped, it should first be completely drained, in support of Volvo's core value of Environmental Care.

Follow the Service method below to drain the integral fuel filter in the fuel pump.

SERVICE

Note:
Use a flat-bladed screwdriver or small pry bar in Steps 1 through 4.

1. Unlock the tab on one side of the valve which sits on top of the fuel filter.

2. Unlock the valve by gently prying it upward from behind.

3. Unlock the tab on the other side of the valve.

4. Force the valve up and out of the filter by gently prying it upward from the front.

5. Using a sharp blade, cut the plastic tube which is mounted on the top of the filter. The X in the illustration indicates the location to make the cut.

6. Turn the fuel pump assembly upside down, and drain fuel into a suitable container.

Note:
Fuel will pour from the hole in the filter and from the cut tube (see arrows in illustration). Use appropriate caution when working with fuel.

Allow the fuel pump to sit upside-down for several hours to ensure complete drainage.
