Body - Retractable Hard Top Stops While Opening

NO: 83-45
DATE: 4-21-2008
MODEL: C70
M. YEAR: 2006-
CHASSIS 000322-
SUBJECT:
Retractable Hard Top (RHT) operation interrupted hall sensor # 9
REFERENCE: VIDA

Note!
If using a printed version of this TNN, first check for the latest online version.

DESCRIPTION:
At times the Retractable Hard Top (RHT) opening operation stops when the trunk lid reaches the fully opened position. This may be caused by signal interruption from sensor # 9.

SERVICE:
The signal from hall sensor # 9 may be interrupted due to an incorrect position of the sensor in relation to the pole-plate. The sensor position needs to be checked / adjusted so the maximum alignment difference is 1/32nd of an inch (1 mm). See the following instructions for checking / adjusting the sensor.

Preparation

Operate the RHT open / close button until the trunk lid is in the fully opened position as shown here.

The circled area is the location of the sensor and pole-plate assembly.

Check sensor position

Check the sensor position in relation to the pole plate.

NOTE:
This picture is taken from above. The dashed circle identifies the pole plate; the solid rectangle identifies the sensor housing.

If the off-set is less than 1/32nd of an inch (1 mm) on each side of the pole plate then there is another cause of the interruption and further fault tracing is required.

If the off-set is greater than 1/32nd of an inch (1 mm), on either side see step 3.

NOTE:
In the example shown here the sensor would need to be adjusted. The yellow lines indicate the forward and rearward edges of the pole plate, the sensor is slightly outside this area.

Align Bracket

If not aligned as stated above; loosen the sensor screw and move the sensor forward or rearward to align with the pole plate as much as possible.

NOTE;
If it is not possible to achieve the correct position, the hydraulic cylinder of the trunk lid needs to be adjusted. See step 4.

Hydraulic Cylinder Adjustment

If the correct sensor alignment has not been achieved the hydraulic cylinder needs to be adjusted.

Open the trunk lid and remove the inner trim panel as shown.

IMPORTANT TIP:
You may want to apply tape along the vertical edges of the cylinder for reference, the hydraulic cylinder should NEVER be moved left or the right, only up or down!

NOTE:
Only loosen the bolts enough to be able to move the cylinder!

Loosen the 3 bolts that hold the hydraulic cylinder and move the cylinder up. The adjustment can be as much as 1/8th inch (2 mm). This will increase the trunk lid opening angle (If the cylinder is moved down this will decrease the opening angle).

Retighten the bolts to 7 lb.ft. (10Nm).

Verify repair

Once the cylinder has been moved; check / adjust alignment of sensor 9 to pole plate as described in steps 1 and 2.

Once the correct position has been established; check the function of the RHT by operating one full cycle.
