Body - Circular Marks On Tonneau Cover

NO: 83-40

DATE: 5-15-2007

MODEL/YEAR:
C70/2006 - 2007

CHASSIS:
000000 - 014425

SUBJECT:
Tonneau Cover Marks

REFERENCE:
VIDA

DESCRIPTION:

Several cases of circular marks on the tonneau cover have been reported. The marks are located along the rear edge of the cover and have a dark brown shade (see picture shown). The root cause has been determined to be solvents in the rubber bumpers that come into contact with the cover, therefore new bumpers have been introduced from chassis number 014426. Contact between the bumpers and the tonneau cover can be caused by incorrect adjustment of the tonneau cover hard stops.

Note:
Due to bouncing of the tonneau cover even with a correct stop adjustment a touching condition may still occur when the trunk lid is slammed.

Material

SERVICE:

Replace the rubber bumpers with the new material P/N 30787921 and check adjustment of the hard stop position bumpers as instructed below.

Once the bumpers have been replaced; clean / remove the marks from the tonneau cover. If this can not be done to a satisfactory level, replace the cover.

Verify condition

Inspect the tonneau cover for the marks as previously shown.

With the trunk lid as shown replace the bumpers (P/N 30787921) and check/adjust the position of the hard stops as instructed.

Adjustment of hard stops

Install new bumpers (P/N 30787921) and make sure they are tight (one each side)

Check / adjust bumper (A) to a height of 15/16ths of an inch (23 mm) from bracket to top of stop

Note:
Never exceed 1 in. (25 mm).

Check both sides.

Caution:
Exceeding 1 in. (25 mm) may result in too much pressure on the hydraulic system.

Adjust bumper (B) to the lowest position. Lock nut and cap located under the bracket.

Check both sides

Removing the marks from the cover

Good results have been experienced with a 50/50 mixture of alcohol and water or with ACRYSOL SOLVENT Spray (Kent Automotive P/N P60170).

Also Volvo Throttle Cleaner has been used with good results on more stubborn stains.

Use a soft cloth and work with circular motions.

Important note:
The surface must be cleaned thoroughly with water afterward in order to remove any residue of the cleaning agent.

If the cover can not be restored to a satisfactory level, replace the tonneau cover.
