Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair
Sub-frame rear, replacingNote: The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Preparatory work
Remove the rear springs on both sides.
Remove the rear anti-roll bar.
Removal
Removing the brake caliper
Remove the following on both sides:
- the 2 x screws
- the brake caliper.
Remove the brake hose from its bracket. Hang the brake caliper in a suitable way.
Removing the shock absorber
Remove the following on both sides:
- the screw
- the shock absorber from the lateral link.
Removing the air baffle
Remove the following on both sides:
- the plastic nuts x 2 (1)
- the screw x 1 (2)
- the air baffle.
Note: The illustration displays the left-hand side. When removing on the right-hand side, the same procedure applies with the right hand air baffle.
Removing the lateral link
Remove the following on both sides:
- the 2 screws (1)
- the connector (2).
Removing the clips for the brake cable
Remove:
- the screw
- the 1 clip.
Removing the carbon filter container
Remove the carbon filter container.
Removing the exhaust mounting
Remove the rubber mounting.
Removing the sub-frame
Use a post hoist with a lifting table and stud guides. Position the lifting table against the subframe.
Note: Ensure that the lifting table is centered under the sub-frame for optimal weight distribution. Check that the lifting table is correctly applied against the sub-frame.
Remove the 3 screws on both sides.
Carefully lower the sub-frame approximately 100 mm.
Position a retaining strap around the sub-frame and post lift to ensure that the sub-frame does not fall off.
Lower the sub-frame.
Caution: Ensure that no cables / hoses are trapped when lowering the sub-frame.
Transferring components
Remove the following on both sides:
- the screw x 1 (1)
- the screw, x 1 (2).
Remove the following on both sides:
- the screw
- the lateral link together with control arms and tie rod.
Remove the old sub-frame. Place the new sub frame on the lifting table.
The new sub-frame components.
Install:
- the lateral link together with control arms and tie rod
- the screw.
Do not tighten yet.
Install:
- the screw x 1 (1)
- the screw, x 1 (2).
Do not tighten yet.
Installation
Note: For tightening torques, See: Specifications.
Installing the sub-frame
Carefully lift the sub-frame.
Note: Ensure that no cables / hoses are trapped when installing the sub-frame. Install the 3 screws on both sides. Tighten. See: Specifications
Remove the lifting table.
Installing the exhaust mounting
Install the rubber mounting.
Installing the carbon filter container
Install the carbon filter container.
Installing the clips for the brake cable
Install:
- the 1 clip
- the screw.
Installing the lateral link
Install on both sides:
- the 2 screws (1). Tighten. See: Specifications
- the connector (2).
Tightening the upper control arm and the tie rod
Install a transmission jack under the lateral link.
Press up the lateral link to the normal position. For the correct value in the normal position, see: Normal position.
Tighten:
- the screw for the upper control arm. Tighten. See: Specifications
- the 1 x screws for the tie rod. Tighten. See: Specifications.
Installing the air baffle
Install on both sides:
- the air baffle
- the plastic nuts x 2 (1)
- the screw, x 1 (2).
Note: The illustration displays the left-hand side. When installing on the right-hand side, the same procedure applies with the right hand air baffle.
Installing the shock absorber
Install on both sides:
- the shock absorber
- the screw. Tighten. See: Specifications
- the brake hose in its bracket.
Installing the brake caliper
Install on both sides:
- the brake caliper
- the 2 screws. Tighten. See: Specifications Install the brake hose in its bracket.
Finishing
Install the anti-roll bar. See: Anti-roll bar rear, replacing.
Install on both sides:
- the springs. See: Spring rear, replacing
- the rear wheels.
Carry out wheel alignment. See: Alignment; Service and Repair.
Tighten the screw for the lower control arm.
Tighten. See: Specifications
