SUBJECT: Clicking or ratcheting noise audible with AUX input selected
REFERENCE: VIDA repair information

DESCRIPTION
If the AUX input is selected and the audio volume is around 50% or higher, a clicking, ratcheting or humming noise may be audible if no media player is connected, or between songs with a connected media player.

PRODUCTION MODIFICATION:
The connection between the AUX input plug and the IAM (Integrated Audio Module) has been changed from shielded cable to twisted cable. This change was introduced after the chassis numbers indicated in the header

SERVICE:
An AUX service cable has been developed to minimize the noise in the vehicles listed in the header. If the customer is reporting the above symptoms and the vehicle is within the chassis numbers listed above, install the AUX service cable using the appropriate instructions included in this document.

Required parts:
P/N 30798531 AUX service cable for S80
P/N 30786841 AUX service cable XC90 S40 V50 C70
P/N 983747 Cable tie (2 required)

Required special tool:
9512639 Terminal removal tool

Input level matching
Since the sound quality and audio volume with the media player selected depends on both output volume of the media player and volume as set by the audio system of the car, it is important to set the volume as follows:

It is always more desirable to have the output level of the source (IPOD, MP3,etc...) as high as possible and to adjust the final volume level of the audio system using the " AUX input level" in the vehicle's audio system menu.
- Adjust AUX input level in the vehicle's audio system menu to 0
- Adjust audio volume to the required volume with radio or CD selected.
- Adjust volume on media player to minimum, connect the output of the player to the AUX input and start player.
- Adjust volume of the media player to reach the same volume level as when radio or CD was selected.

If this does not lead to a satisfactory result, adjust the AUX input volume through the ICM menu as described in the Owner's Manual.
