Campaign - Engine Oil Leaks Into Cooling System

SUBJECT:
SC 148 V8 Engine Oil Cooler

DESCRIPTION:





In certain 2005-2006 XC90 V8 vehicles, the engine oil cooler may leak and may cause oil to leak into the vehicle's engine cooling system.

SERVICE:

The corrective action will be to replace the engine oil cooler. Follow the instructions below.

1. Preparations





Remove the cover from the expansion tank. Raise the vehicle. Use jacking points as illustrated.

The jacking plate must have a rubber pad to prevent damage to the car.

2. Remove the lower engine cover





Remove the 6 x screws.

3. Remove the splash guard





Remove the 6 x screws.

Note!
The upper fastening of the guard has a guide sleeve and must therefore be lifted slightly in order to be slid forward.

4. Draining coolant

Open the drain cock on the lower left-hand edge of the cooler.

Drain the coolant into a clean container.

Close the drain cock.

5. Remove the oil cooler

Place a container under the oil cooler. Detach the oil level sensor's cable by removing the clamp's screw.





Remove the 4 x screws.

Pull the oil cooler downwards slightly. Clean the oil sump's mating surfaces with the oil cooler.

Cover the holes in the oil sump. Use tape or similar.

Remove the hose clamps. Remove the oil cooler.

6. Install the oil cooler

Install the hoses and clamps.

Remove the tape from the oil sump.





Install:

- the oil cooler. Use the new 0-ring that comes with the new oil cooler

- the 4 x screws. Tighten to 9 Nm

- the screw to the oil level sensor's cable. Tighten to 11 Nm.

7. Filling with coolant

Use coolant filler 951 2957 and Adapter Cap 951 2952.

Follow the equipment instructions.

Caution!
Use the filling equipment. Manual filling leaves air pockets behind in the system.

Follow-up work

Start the engine and run to normal operating temperature.

Check for leakage. Check the function. Check the oil and coolant level. Top-up if necessary.

Install:

- lower engine cover

- the 6 x screws. Tighten to 24 Nm

- the protective plate

- the 6 x screws. Tighten to 50 Nm.
