Checking the System, Rear Seat Entertainment, Generation 3.1/3.2

Checking the system

Information
If no screens work and the malfunction cannot be connected to a special function, e.g., when the aux-input is used, the malfunction cause may be:
- Contact resistance in the terminals.
- One or both screens not connected.
- Open-circuit in the cable between the display screen and the Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) (Y-shaped cable).
- Voltage supply to the screen or Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE).
- Damaged display screen.
- Damaged rear seat entertainment module (RSE).

Continue - Checking the function

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the function

- Ignition on.
- Switch on the system using the remote control pointed directly at one of the display screens.
Check that none of the display screens have been turned off using the remote control.
Check the function of the system by changing the video source. Ensure that the infra red (IR) receiver on the lower section of the display screen is not blocked.
Check the batteries in the remote control. Replace them if they are defective.

Can the system be turned on?

Yes - No Fault Found

No - Checking the power supply

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the power supply

Note! Switch off the system before connecting/disconnecting a connector.

Check that the fuse for the Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) is intact.
Check that there is voltage to the fuse holder. The voltage must be approximately 10-14 V.
Disconnect the lower connector for the left-hand display screen. Turn on the ignition and try to turn on the system by aiming the remote control at the right screen. If the system can now be switched on the fault has probably been traced.
If the system still cannot be switched on: Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the lower connector for the right-hand display screen. Reconnect the lower connector for the left-hand display screen. Turn on the ignition and try to turn on the system by aiming the remote control at the left screen. If the system can be turned on now, change place of the two head rests to confirm that the malfunction 'changes place'.
Remedy as necessary.

Does the rear seat entertainment system work?

Yes - DONE

No - Checking the display screens

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the display screens

Note! Switch off the system before connecting/disconnecting a connector.

Disconnect the connector from the one display screen. Turn on the system and investigate the trouble symptom. If the malfunction still exists, check in the same way but reinstall the first connector for the other screen.

Checking the head restraints
Minimize fault-tracing by swapping the position of the two head restraints to see if the fault "follows". Change places of the head rests and check the trouble symptom.

Hint: It is unusual for a screen to break.

Checking the remote control signal

Checking the wiring
Turn off the ignition.
Check the wiring and connectors between the display screens. Check for damage or oxidation. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Also check the connector on the Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE). Check for damage and oxidation. Remedy as necessary.

Checking IR-signal, left screen
Check the cable between the upper connector to the display screen terminal #4 and Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) terminal #A4. Check for an open-circuit.
Check the cable between the upper connector to the display screen terminal #5 and Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) terminal #A5. Check for an open-circuit.
Connect the head restraint, turn on the ignition and measure the voltage on connection #5 for the screen. The voltage must be 4-5 V.
To check the voltage level on signal cable for IR-signal #4, proceed as follows:
1. Connect all cables and connectors.
2. Measure the voltage between the signal cable for the Infra Red (IR) signal to the left-hand display screen and ground. The voltage must be 4-5 V.

Note! Do not press any of the buttons on the remote control during this measurement. Measure from the rear side of a suitable connector. Do not damage the terminals in the connector.

3. Aim the remote control at the left screen and press in a button on the remote control. The voltage on the signal cable must fall to approximately 3.5 V for as long as the button on the remote control is pressed in.

Checking IR-signal, right screen
Check the cable between the upper connector to the display screen terminal #4 and Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) terminal #A14. Check for an open-circuit.
Check the cable between the upper connector to the display screen terminal #5 and Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) terminal #A15. Check for an open-circuit.
Connect the head restraint, turn on the ignition and measure the voltage on connection #5 for the screen. The voltage must be 4-5 V.
Compare the latest reading as above with the signal for the infra red (IR) signal from the right-hand infra red (IR) receiver for the display screen.

Conclusion
If the result of the above checks is that no malfunction was found, this means that the receivers in both screens work and that the remote control is OK. If voltages on the cables are OK but a lower voltage cannot be measured when a button on the remote control is pressed down, try with replacing the remote control.

Was a fault detected?

Yes - DONE

No - Checking serial communication to screens

-------------------------------------------------

Checking serial communication to screens

- Ignition on.
- Switch on the system using the remote control.
Check if the screens flicker once or flicker continuously when the system is turned on.

Do the display screens flicker when the power is switched on?

Yes - Checking serial communication to screens 1

No - Checking voltage to Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE)

-------------------------------------------------

Checking serial communication to screens 1

- Restore cables and contacts.
- Ignition on.
Check the voltage on the serial connections between Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE) and the screens (4 cables). In all cases the voltage shall be approx. 2.5 V.

Hint: It is easier to take measurements at the upper connector for the display screens.

Is the voltage below 2 V for any measurement?

Yes - Checking serial communication to screens 2

No - Checking voltage to Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE)

-------------------------------------------------

Checking serial communication to screens 2
Loosen the lower connector in the seat where the previous measurement was below 2 V.
Take readings from the same cable as before in the lower connector.
If voltage in the lower connector now is approx. 2.5 V, the screen in question is probably defective.
Remedy as necessary.

Was a fault detected?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Checking voltage to Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE)

-------------------------------------------------

Checking voltage to Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE)

- Ignition on.
Check the voltage feed to Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE).

Hint: The control module has two voltage feeds.
At ignition on, the voltage shall be battery voltage on both feeds.

Also check the ground connection to the control module.
If no other malfunction has been found, try with replacing Rear Seat Entertainment Module (RSE).
